She is almost 6 yrs old and has had fevers ranging from 104.4 to 99's. Sometimes no fever. Her only other symptom is stuffy nose. She is drinking a ton of fluids. We switch off Tylnol & motrin every 3 hrs. Can a Flu really last this long? She has no other symptoms. I got her 104 fever down with a tepid bath and motrin. My 3 year old son and I got it after her. The school said a viral infection is going around.

She only had 104.4 the first day and 104.7 the second. Both went down with motrin and a tepid bath. Her fever has not went over 103.5 since. The doctor says it is just viral it needs time. Is he right?

HI There

Cause
Fever is not a disease but a condition in the body wherein the balance of circulation has become disturbed. This is nature's way of trying to burn out the toxic poisons. When the body becomes exposed to excessive chilling or dampness, the capillaries near the surface contract and the pores close by becoming obstructed with body waste matter. This results in a containment of body heat and a sudden rise of body temperature. In fever the natural body function is to increase the heat to a point wherein the thick glutinous and fibrinous matters loading and congesting the system are made liquid enough to pass through the fine and delicate excretory membranes and tubules.

If you want to heal yourself quickly then do Hydrotherapy. Get in the shower hot (dont burn yourself) and let your body adjust for a minute, then turn it all the way to COLD! You can yell if you like! That's allowed! Do this for a minute as well. Do this rotation for at least 8 times. The idea is to blast new blood cells into the area that is sick. Hot water makes blood rise and cold pushes it down in the body. This process helps move new blood to the area and speeds up the healing process. End on cold.

Dress warm and go to bed. Drink lots of water and do it again tonight or in the morning until desired results are met.

Best of health to you

the flu can last quite some time. Influenza can be treated within 3 days of the onset of symptoms, so your family is past that.
treat the fever with Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin every 6 hours. keep your daughter hydrated with popsicles and anything else she will drink -this is not a time to enforce rules about sodas, etc! keep her cool by not overdressing her or giving her blankets.
tepid baths are great. if you cannot get the fever to go down, she will need a visit to the doctor or urgent care to rule out a bacterial cause of the fever such as strep or ear infection.

Influenza can cause those high fevers and also last for this sort of time frame, so it's possible. Keep giving her plenty of fluids and the fever reducers as you have been. Hopefully she'll break the fever soon.

If it is influenza, there are medicines that can reduce the duration of illness, but they have to be started within 48hrs of symptom onset.

Keep an eye on her, it might be worth giving her doctor's office a call just to see if they have any recommendations or know what is circulating in the area.

For the stuffy nose, try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It draws out all the gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean).

The buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot. The special bottle and salt is about $20.

You can do this a often as you like with no bad side effects.

You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. So if you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis.

The flu can least that long and the flu is a virus. If you've already talked to the doctor and he isn't worried about her fever then he's most likely right. Generally the typical flu cause many other symptoms the most common of which are body aches and nausea/vomiting or diarrhea. It doesn't sound like the usual flu to me.

We have seen plenty of this virus going around in my office. Even adults are getting it. It is a flu virus. don't be surprized if she gets a cough that won't go away too. Keep up the good work, you are doing exactly what my doc says to do. Wash hands often and keep yourself from getting it next. See your doc if the cough gets bad. I'm sorry you are having a bad time of it. Hope they feel better soon.

That can happen. When my son was that age he had fevers that would be on going for two weeks! Man, I kept taking him to doc and they ran every test. I finally figured it out. He was just relapsing back and forth into the sickness because his body wasn't given time to recover. Like- I had to finally send him to school because he couldn't miss anymore and I believe that going back to school and being out in the elements just kept him sick. Anyways... I started giving him vitamon c chewables and he got over it and is hardly ever sick anymore since he takes vitamons. Don't fret it - little kids get sick a lot more and longer than bigger kids.
