I graduated college- but with not so great gpa. I was told being an officer in the navy probably wouldnt happen because of this although i just scored 97 on the ASVAB. One thing im looking for in the navy is the opportunity to be stationed in japan. Any suggestions on how i should pursue this or what options would be available to me? Also I have not yet decided on what length of time to be active duty. How could that impact my chances of doing what i want? Also if anyone knows about what my chances of making officer would be, I'd appreciate the knowledge.

of your GPA is not 3.5 or higher in a tech or hard science major, the recruiter is probably corect and you wouldn't get picked up for OCS. You may have a better time of it if you go enlisted, and after training and being in the Fleet for a year or so, apply to OCS from within. Your GPA will be offset by Fleet Experience and any leadership you exhibit

Your line scores determine what Ratings you are eligible for. Nearly every rating has some chance of being stationed in japan, most Likely Yokosuka. Sasebo has Gators and Atsugi is the air base, But Yoko has 7Th Fleet and all the tennant shore and support commands.

The rating you choose determines how long your AD commitment is.. the longer the training required, the longer the AD time. Some A schools allow the top graduate to get first pick of orfers. If Japan is available, great, but it boild down to needs of the Navy. If they need you in Norfolk, then that is where you go.

But Yoko is a fantastic base and we loved every minute of it.

Find an officer recruiter. The enlisted recruiters don't know anything about officer recruiting or the requirements. For enlisted personnel it is much harder to get stationed overseas for your first couple of years because it costs a lot to live overseas and as a junior sailor you don't make very much. They also want to keep the trouble to a minimum so they try to get some Navy experience under your belt before spending a lot of money to send you overseas. If you turn out to be a screw up it is much cheaper to discharge you from Virginia or California than it is from Japan. At any rate, look for ships or ask for ships when you are picking orders from A school that are in Japan. Right now it is the Kitty Hawk and Juneau for sure and the George Washington is replacing the Kitty Hawk when it decommissions soon. Hope this helps.

I agree with the first answer, go see an officer recruiter. You already have a degree and as far as GPA, that only applies when you are actually using a program that military paying for the degree. As for assignments to Japan, The navy will assign you according to your officer job code, and if there is billet for u there. My son is currently assigned in Japan, his first orders and is attached with a fighter squadron. The military assigns people based on where they are needed whether it's first term or not.
