There has been only limited clear evidence to this, and it is of many divergent beliefs once it left the realms of the first apostles. Generally the Writings in the Gospel, and the letters of the apostles, largely related in the bible, though not entirely, are the best sources unless you believe in the divine revelations of the Quran, and Baha'i (which claims to be the second coming fulfilled) Scriptures.
I am Baha'i, so believe in the latter, though make no assumptions you do, but are welcome to look into it.

I agree that Baptist and Pentecost are the only two forms mentioned in the Bible. John the Baptist (which is like the second cousin to Jesus) can be found in all the gospels, and the day of Pentecost can be found in Acts. If anyone can back up anything else (from the Bible not the phone book or some other made up religions book of lies) then by all means share.
And Catholicism has to be the biggest load of crap ever. Who believes that the Pope has any power what so ever? I believe the Bible states that Jesus was BAPTIZED in the name of the father. That means he was immersed in water (the whole body in water). It says that when he came out of the water he saw the heavens opened. It didn't say methodized, catholosized, church of christafied, but BAPTIZED......

The first Christians were simply called Christian. After the foretold apostasy started to take hold, Constantine made apostate Catholicism the state religion.

A Christian religion would be one following the teachings of Jesus Christ. The first to do so were the Disciples who were predominately Jewish.
The term Christian was first used by Romans in describing the 'Rebels' who were annoying the scheme of things.
There were many sects and it was only in the second century that Christian was used to describe a denomination by the Catholic (Universal) Church. Both the Roman Catholic Church of today and the Eastern Orthodox Church claim to be decedents of that organisation.

This is a loaded Question! The topic of religion is one which you must seek with faith. Sometimes your faith leads you and Sometimes your faith is formed along the journey. I try to give you three links which give varied views on this subject. Keep in mind that we may never really know the True answer to your question. Many people interpret the Bible and Other Religious books differently. Move forward carefully and research with an open mind. Even the Bible says "All Things Are Possible". This doesn't narrow down interpretations at all. Hopefully this will satisfy your journey for knowledge on this subject. Remember Knowledge IS Power, But Wisdom is knowing your heart and allowing it to lead you to your own interpretation which will satisfy your soul. Lot's of luck and hope this helps!

Followers of Jesus were not labled any religion until the Catholic church formed and then named them ana-baptists, because they were against the Catholic churches infant baptism. Over the years they have just dropped the Ana part and called themselves Baptists. But that is the name the Catholics gave to them. So the first organized religion was most likely the Catholic church, but the original followers of Jesus did not call themselves by a name of religion until others gave them a name.

If you are a Lutheran,
Martin Luther ex-monk of the Catholic Church founded your religion, in the year 1517.
If you belong to the Church of England,
King Henry VIII founded your religion in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry.
If you are a Protestant Episcopalian,
your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England, founded by Samuel Seabury in the American colonies in the 17th century.
If you are a Congregationalist,
your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.
If you are a Methodist,
your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.
If you are Unitarian,
Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.
If you are Mormon (Latter Day Saints),
Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, N.Y. in 1829.
If you are a Baptist,
you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched in Amsterdam in 1606.
If you are the Dutch Reformed Church,
you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in N.Y. in 1628.
If you worship with the Salvation Army,
your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.
If you are Christian Scientist,
you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.
If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as "Church of the Nazarene", "Pentecostal Gospel", "Jehovah’s Witness", "Born Again" etc...
your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past fifty years.
If you are a Roman Catholic,
you know that Jesus Christ the Son of God founded your religion in the year 33, and that it has not changed since that time.
Even today, the above-enumerated facts are still undeniable. So the first Christians are the Catholics , the first Pope as anyone would know is St.Peter whose successor is Pope Benedict XVl and the Roman Catholic church is the only church that will stand firm on the rock of Peter till the end of time.

The Catholic church is the only Christian denomination that can be traced directly back to Christ.
The Catholic church compiled the sacred books to form the Bible.
The Catholic church was created, by order of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the eternal head of the Church. He named Peter to be the first temporal head (Mt. 16:18), and upon this rock He built His church.
The Eastern Orthodox split from the Catholic Church in the 10th Century. The Protestant denominations came about beginning in the 16th Century. The Evangelical Protestants of today, and the non-denominational Christian churches trace their origins back to the late 19th Century, a little over 100 years ago.

A Christians is someone who follows Jesus.
The first Christians were the people who followed Jesus. Those were the first Christians.
Then Christians were scattered. Christian reformed in Rome where the Bible was put together and churches were built in Jesus memory.
Remember...Catholics are not Christians...Mormons are not Christians...Jehovah's are not Christians. Religion is like a cult and the true church of Jesus are his followers.(Christians)
