The cost of producing a cut and scored piece of cardboard that pizza place workers can fold into a square box is cheaper than creating a fancy round container.
Records, cds, and many round things come in square packages so it's probably a fact that square vessels are cheaper than round ones.

As a former Round Table employee, I can tell you the answer is because square boxes are much easier to fold when they come to the restaurant as flat cardboard.

because pizza wont stay hot in a round box. a squared box helps the heat circulate throughout the entire box so your pizza is piping hot in 30 min. or less!

So that when you have had one to many to drink you don't just grab the box and start to pig out.Of course these day's with some pizza places you wouldn't know the difference.
