Your Jeep uses a vacuum disconnect axle (thing of it as automatic hubs), if you try and shift it into 4WD while move at 50 MPH, its going to make some horrible noises, and they aren't good.

All you have to do is pull the transfer case shifter back into 4WD while you are either stopped, or barely rolling. Same goes for 4-Low. No hubs or anything to lock.

You greatly reduce the stress on everything by shifting it while at a stop.

Stop the vehicle....if it has lockouts on the front wheel hubs you need to make sure those are in the locked position. Then in N, shift the 4wd into low or high. Then let her rip!! Would check to see if it has shift on the fly or not...stop into a local Jeep dealer and ask. A salesperson should be able to help out.

Your jeep can be shifted into 4Hi at speeds up to 55MPH but I always suggest that a person stops before engaging the 4WD as it puts a lot of stress on the front drive train and the transmission/transfer case. To engage 4Lo the vehicle needs to be rolling 2-3MPH for the transfer case to properly engage.

i own a shop, and all you have to do is move the shifter to the 4 wheel drive position on it,and if ts got lock out hubs ,lock those in also,on each axle,if its automatic locks just move the shifter from 2 high to 4 high, and it will be in 4 wheel drive that's about all there is too it,only use it when you need it though,4 wheel isn't as good as 2 wheel on ice,4 wheel will pull you off the road Rather than help you stay on it,but it does good in snow, and mud, good luck,i hope this helps.

Find the little shifter below and to the right of the regualar five speed shifter. While parked, pull it backwards one notch to put it in 4H. Pull it right, then back again to put it into 4L. Push it all the way forward to put it back into 2H. Do all these while parked.

I also have a 1991 Wrangler. Hint: Sometimes after pulling back into 4H, I have to tickle it just a bit to engage.
