Due to some very serious illnesses and life circumstances, I have an extreme amount of debt. Most of the accounts are closed and charged off but at least one is in collections and they are constantly calling my dad's # (I lived there years ago) and driving him crazy. He is very ill and getting upset with me. I am on SSD and have no money to pay these debts at this time (maybe never). I was cautioned not to contact the collectors via phone as they are very nasty and cruel (my disability is major depression and as weak and wimpy as it sounds - I'm very nervous about hearing the nastiness that's surely to come). I know this is my responsibility and I guess I'm just not sure what my next step should be. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Listed below is a link to sample letters to send to creditors. There is one asking them to stop contacting you. Send it certified mail so that you get a confirmation that they received the letter.

You might want to read up on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Debt collectors need to follow these rules when trying to contact you as well as giving you specific rights.

Just ring them and take it like a man. How fair is it that your father should have to deal with these people when he is sick too.

Don't use the depression as an excuse to get out of this, it's not going to be enjoyable for you but it's something you have to do and besides that it might lift a huge weight off your shoulders to finally deal with your demons instead of spending everyday worrying about it.
