I am looking for a little dog for less then $200. Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Pomeranian, or Shih Tzu. I have 3 kids and I really really want a dog. Does anyone know where I can get a small dog for hella cheap?

Go to your local rescues. Those dogs need loving children to play with. Also check the newspaper but remember to ALWAYS take the dog to a trusted vet before purchasing. Breeders are often worth it--known ones--but cost a lot more.

Avoid pet stores as most come from puppy mills and their price tag comes with a variety of health problems.

The best place to get a good, healthy, friendly, beautiful dog is a RESPONSIBLE dog breeder... Good breeders do health checks, and show their dogs at dog shows (like Westminster on TV).... And even though you may pay a little more, if something goes wrong with the pup, a good breeder will offer you a new pup or a full refund of your money.

Don't fall for ads in the newspaper that say "champion lines"... Most newspaper ads are just 2 dogs bred by someone who doesn't know a thing. And if your pup gets sick they will not do anything about it. Also just because it is AKC registered (or registered with any club) does not mean it is a "good" dog. Always avoid dogs that are CKC - continental kennel club - registered. Very bad sign.

NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store... They are way overpriced anyway... Plus during the lifetime of the dog it will probably get so sick you will spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet. Pet Store puppies are VERY POOR quality.

There are always good dogs at the animal shelter or breed rescues that need new homes. They are also offered at a reasonable adoption fee. Try rescuing a dog.

It will be very difficult to get a pure bred dog for $200 or less.A good place to start are animal rescues. If you go to petfinder.com and type in your zip code,it will show dogs that match your criteria in your area.If there is a rescue nearby, you can get the address off of petfinder and they tend to have purebred,or close to purebred,of the breed they represent. What I would avoid are pet stores. The dogs are overpriced and not in good health.Definately a breeder is the way to go.If you want a good dog for a reasonable price you might want to call local breeders to see if they are selling an older dog that they have bred in the past. They sell these for around the price you are looking for.

As for the breeds you are considering, with three kids a Shih Tzu would probably be best.I have lived with all of the breed you have suggested, except for Maltese, and currently own a Pom.Yorkies can be skiddish/hyperactive and will just overall drive you crazy.Poms are extremely yappy and prissy and love attention.Shih Tzu generally have low maintenance personalites and are very calm.

Definately start searching on petfinder.com and let me know if you need any help!I have 2 dogs and I absolutely love them.It would be a great gift for your children!Good Luck!

If you want to get a little dog for an affordable price, I would try a local rescue, humane society, or animal shelter.

Fees vary widely. Some shelters charge as little $25 for an animal, some rescues charge as much as over $300. The reason rescues charge a lot more is because they have full health checks, medical treatments, etc. done on their dogs, whereas shelters do not.

Also, please keep in mind that the price of the dog is not going to be the initial cost of the dog. Aside from paying for the dog you will need to pay for equipment - crate, bed, toys, food, bowls, leash, collar, obedience classes.

And on top of that, when you adopt a dog from a shelter or any facility, you are often required to go for a vet check within 10 days. In my area, a thorough physical runs about $150 for a dog. Add to that the price of shots and preventive medicines (heartworm pills, flea and tick prevention).

Check the web for animal rescue organizations in your area. There is one in my area that specializes in small dogs. Also, check your local animal shelters - both the pound and SPCA. You can put a request in with some shelters for a specific type of dog. Do your research on the type of dog you want. Take your time and try not to make an emotional decision (that is difficult not to do). Be selective, but adopt a dog - it'll save a life. Sometimes the mix dogs can have less medical problems than purebreds.

I suggest going to the pound and getting a little puppy/dog that is in need of a home. It will be very cheap, and you'll be saving it's life. Plus...mutt's often have the best personalities. Test it out with your kids though, first.

Its hard to find a pure-bred for less than $200. You may be able to find so mixed puppies at the Humane Society. Sometimes in the classified sections of newspapers you can find puppies that need homes and are pure-bred. But again finding a cheap puppy usually means they are mixed,
