When you click on "Start" in Windows, several programs will pop up in the menu. The ones at the top will always pop up, no matter what. They are "pinned" there until you remove them. The ones at the bottom are only the programs you've used recently or frequently.

When you 'pin' to your start menu you are fixing an icon link there; when you hit the start button you will have quick and easy access to that software.

Some moron at Microsoft doesn't like the word "add" so they came up with the term "pin" (as in thumb tac perhaps.)

Just means add it to the start menu
