Last I checked, it's about $50,000 to have solar panels installed on your roof. I suppose there are other ways to "go solar" though. One is to install a water reservoir of some sort on the roof, so that the sun heats your shower water. I have no idea what this costs or even if there are many people that do it. Another idea is to use passive solar heat, such as high windows facing east or west, with a wall opposite them that absorbs heat from the sun and radiates it back in the evening. Another is to use shade from trees and the architecture of the house to cool it, rather than massive A/C units.

I suppose the list goes on. But you're right, it's expensive.

With all the pollution we are puking into the air, when will the sun become a bright spot in the night sky? Solar isn't the most reliable source of alternative energy. Much prefer the wind. Always there, even at night.
I'd go solar, if it was affordable. I think it's the conspiracy thing happening. The oil companies, again, need to make the big bucks. They buy up all the good alternative energy ideas. We are stuck with the leftover expensive ones that no one buys in to.

If solar panels would drop below $500 per panel, I believe that a lot of people would begin to use them. As for some of the other ideas or questions raised for this question, I would like to direct those interested to the magazine "Home Power". There is a lot of information in this magazine for alternative energy ideas and the implementation of it. However small anyone begins, it is still a beginning, and worth further pursuit. Another source of good information is the archived material from Mother Earth News. All of the original issues are available on CD. Well worth having, and making use of.

I am going to go solar with in the next year. And it's not a matter of having the money to do it it's more about what you want to spend your money on. If you go to http://www.mrsolar.com you can find prices on solar systems that start around 15,000 dollars. Not bad if you ask me.

I said it's more a matter of what you want to spend your money on, heres why--- a solar system costs around 15,000 and up and can save you potentialy hundereds off your electric bill (eliminate what your bill all together) that money will pay for your system... consider the cost of a new car. (mine cost us 15,800) we pay 400 a month for it. (interest at 14.5%, higher then most rates) so if I were to finance a solar system at say 5% or 7% you can imagine that my costs will be about 225 a months take the 100 that I would save monthly on my electric combine it with the potential to save on heating and it pays for its self. every one can afford Solar if they just give up buying a new car for 5-6 years. Personaly I'll take solar over the car.
