I am from australia, and i know that the country is not just full of hilbillys and yobbos and etc, but everytime a show or cartoon mentions australia, its always something to do with hillbillys and/or kangaroos..

i am just wondering if the rest of the world actually thinks australia is like that?

No way. I see Australia as a Southern, warmer, and much more amazing Canada.

I live in Canada, but there are only 2 other countries I would ever move to in this world: the USA and Australia. Maybe New Zealand.

Australia is amazing. If there is any stereotype, it is more of an 'aura' that we get from Australians. Intelligent, yet rugged and tough. You have a beautiful open country, beautiful modern cities, and a fair, well run, government. You also pull your weight around the world. Yes, you have Kangaroos. It doesn't mean thats all we think of. When I think of Australia I automatically think of Sydney - a beautiful and modern Western style city.

Only an ignorant idiot would think of Australia as a land of Kangaroos and Hillbillies.

Heck, if Australia wasn't a $2000 flight away, I would be there more often. I may have moved their already. I know it has more to offer than Kangaroos and Hillbillies.

Besides, even "Australian hillbilly" stereotypes are cool. They are rugged, adventerous, say cool slang terms, and wrestle crocodiles.

At least the "Australian hillbilly" stereotypes don't inbreed like their "American hillbilly" stereotype counterparts!

Well not hillbilly's but maybe lots of crocodile hunters, crocodiles, kaola bears, kangaroos and alcohol?
Just kidding.
I have always heard it was a beautiful country and that even though it takes a LONG time to get there from the states that I should check it out so I do plan to visit there someday!

If someone else thinks that he must have just crawled out from under a rock.......
I've been down under and it is certainly not like that at all. Indeed a wonderful place and I wouldn't mind living there. The only thing that bothered me in Sydney was that people don't use their air conditioning enough. I like it to be about 18 to 20 degrees indoors.

arual: Sorry you had to experience that. I'm an American and I can tell you that unfortunately a vast majority of my "fellow citizens" are ignorant and uneducated, hence those dumb remarks. I travel all over the world and - really - I've heard the most absurd things from Americans such as .....
- "Do they have escalators in Venezuela?"
- "What.... Singapore has an airline with Jumbo Jets???? How can such a 3rd world nation even afford one plane????"
- "You've lived in Hong Kong.... - so you must speak Japanese huh???"
- "Is Hong Kong Somalia?"
- "You hugged a Koala Bear??? Don't they violently attack humans???"
- "You lived in Germany.... what's it like having lived in a communist nation?"
- "You've been away from the States..... - didn't you miss the freedom???"
- etc. etc. etc........
Really - I'VE HEARD IT ALL!!!!! Amusing but sad at the same time.

ahafner2: Your answer is a perfect example of the aforementioned. I would suggest that you do some traveling before you make such embarassing remarks. Perhaps you should start by venturing out of your "trailer park" community - because you sound like that's where you're from.

Sven, That's because us Aussie's know that 20 degrees is not hot and we don't need to waste electricity like that.

I would worry about what other people think about Australia, it's only a stereotype that was given to us probably by Paul Hogan. That's not a knife!

If stereotypes were true I would just assume that all Americans are gun toting, war loving, I hate Iraq types.

I spent a month in Australia last year. Went to Melbourne, Sydney and up north to Queensland. Australia is the most beautiful country in the world and the men are just drop dead gorgeous. I loved it!!!!

Excellent food and great diving.

I would move there if I could. Fantastic people, great partying, handsome men...what else can a girl wish for???

I think its the land of the top ten deadliest everything!
Snakes, ants, spiders, jellyfish, platypus, octopus, sharks, you name it it seems to always be poisonous or able to eat you!
I will never go there unless I want to always be worried about what might bite and kill me!

Sven B
You should shove it and all that I fore mentioned is true.
I don't think that people go over to Australia with enough information about the wildlife over there and see a pretty Blue Ring octopus in the tidal pools and want to touch it, in fact why don't you go over there and swim with some Irukandji jellyfish. Oh and then pick up a male platypus as a souvenir!
