Tough question.. as people's tastes in beer tend to differ so much.

Personally I'm partial toward Belgian Ales. Examples of good and just as importantly somewhat easily accessible options (seeing how some are harder to come by) would include Duvel, Orval, Chimay Grand Reserve, La Chouffe, Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus ABT 12

Other great non Belgian options would include most anything brewed by Bell's brewery (Personal favorite of theirs would be Two Hearted Ale, although Oberon is the most popular one)

Celebrator Dopplebock is a good choice if looking for a darker and more malty beer. Rogue Shakesphere Stout would also be a good choice if looking for a darker beer.

Again I could go on for sometime as I've not scratched the surface of my personal faves, but quite honestly it's hard not knowing what kind of beers he might like.

Some 'second tier' meaning not the best of the best, but still well above the average Anheuser Busch, Miller and Coors stuff would be Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and The Sam Adams line.

As for styles.... The Hefeweizen style is one that's easy to love. It's a German wheat style and the beers tend to be easy drinking, but while having nice solid flavor at the same time. One thing to be weary of, is that a lot of American brewers will call the beers they make hefeweizens, when in reality they are nothing more than the more generic.. and not nearly as good American Wheat style.

For this reason I would make a point to look for only highly rated hefeweizens on the page I'm about to share with you.

All in all it might be dollar for dollar the best style to focus on.. especially if your crush is more used to the average college beer. Stouts might be too much for him and at the same time Pale Ale's and IPA's might be too 'bitter'

The website I mentioned you should pay a visit to, would be http://www.beeradvocate.com On the left hand side there should be a link to "best of BA" click on that and it will give you the top 100 beers as rated by members... myself being one.

Print up that page and it will give you something to refer to when shopping. Keep in mind that some like The Westvleteren beers while being divine, are also next to impossible to find in The U.S. and some aren't much easier.

Still though you're bound to find quite a few of them and may even have some fun in the process and decide to buy a few of them for him to try, instead of only one or two

Good luck

Belgian beers are great. You can't go wrong with the original king of beers: Stella Artois. My personal favorite is a begian beer called Westmalle. I think Pale Ales are the best in the States. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Bridgeport IPA are a couple of my favs.

I'm 100% in agreeance with the guy that wrote ten paragraphs.

Chimay is definitely great, get the blue label. Or you could get one of each, small bottles.

Stella Artois is awesome, it's one of the lighter tasting beers, crisp and clean. It's a good drunk too. It makes me very happy, versus other beers that make me feel depressed.

Beer is so nasty to me. I go for the hard liquor, but anyway, my friends who are beer drinkers tell me that Budweiser is really good and ... I can't remember the others. But Corona is always a hit with some limes and salt.
