I've been waiting for my plantar fasciitis to heal and I've been getting treatment for several months now. It's nowhere near healing anytime soon, I was told it could take over a year or more. I'm really good at track (400 meter, triple jump, high jump) and I can't afford to sit this season out. So regardless of opinions I'm gonna go ahead and run w/ plantar fasciitis. I need some advice on how to work around that in training and competitions. Thanks.

plantar fasciitis is not a broken ankle nor anywhere near as severe. I was recommended not to but I was told it is quite possible to compete regardless.

I'm also the number one 400 meter runner and the number one triple jumper at my school. It's pretty important that I compete this year.

Some suggestions.....taking ibuprofen reduces the inflammation. Wearing orthotics (professionally made- not store bought inserts!) will help with cushioning and reducing the impact on your heel. A risky step would be to get a Cortisone injection which will eliminate the pain initially but could cause a plantar fascia rupture (the injection masks the injury.)

I honestly think that your best bet would be to consult an Orthopedic surgeon (not a podatrist; they are not as medically knowledgable as a surgeon...they didn't go to medical school!) A surgeon specializing in foot and ankle can give you the support and help you need to get through the season with plantar fasciitis. It is a very common injury but since you aren't a long distance runner I have a feeling you could do things like track running only (road running would make it worse) stretching and such that perhaps you could still compete.

I would get medical advice though- a sports medicine doctor is also a great idea because they are used to stubborn athletes that want advice as far as how to continue, not be disabled :-) (I've have the best results with doctors who get it that I'm NOT quitting!) I still trained on a bike with a cast on when I tore the ligaments in my ankle in cross country!

Good luck! Be careful!

If you want to cure plantar fasciitis completely in one month check out this site: http://treatmyplantarfasciitis.uk.to- I did it, it works! Pain was gone in only a few days. Good luck!

It is ignorant and just plain stupid to participate in track with any kind of a leg injury. I know how you feel, believe me, my junior year I collapsed my talus(broke my ankle) in the second race of the cross country season(I was then third on the team) and missed the rest of the season as well as winter and spring track. This year I was only able to accomplish being 5th on the team(still varsity but I was third...) which completely sucked. The whole thing happened because I ran on an injury when advised not to. Play it smart and safe and take it easy, there is no way your going to get a scholarship if your ankle is completely gone after the season.
