The concept of the rapture is neither real nor is it a hypothesis. It is a myth invented during the 19th century to explain away some of the more profound discrepancies in the Bible's mythical chronology.

Come on, think about it for a minute. People floating up into the sky? Where do they go? What if you're in your car? Do you go through the roof? Is Jesus like a huge magnet pulling people up in the sky like so many iron fillings?
Pull back the camera for a moment. Picture the blue globe of the Earth. Okay. So Jesus comes back: do all the faithful rise up into the air at the same time all around the globe? How far do they go? What is the destination?
This thought of the rapture struck me as mighty silly when I was participating in the fundamentalist church I went to. We had lots of study groups about the rapture, and the end times, and The Revelation (btw, it's not 'Revelations.' It's The Revelation.) Hal Lindsay, The Late Great Planet Earth, the whole nine yards. I found it to be interesting, but on the same level as science fiction. I just could not see how people of the 20th century (this was back then) could believe in such a silly thing.
So: before you just believe something, think about it. That's what I say. If it makes sense to you, then heck, knock yourself out. Believe it. If it doesn't, then you have the power and the right to say, "I'm sorry, but, what are you trying to get me to believe?"

Miranda answered this well, according to the Bible in 1Thess. Jesus will come to take the believers (the dead in graves, then we who are alive) to heaven = The Rapture. If you read the Bible, God has removed His remnant from His Wrath ie. Noah + His family from the flood, Lot + family from Sodom and Gomorrah, etc. And He has promised to remove His believers from His Wrath also. Read Revelation. And if you think this sounds silly as 1 answerer said, the Bible predicted this also. As were in the days of Noah, so will the end be with people carrying on in sin and making fun of Noah's warnings. This all sounds foolish to the natural man, but The Holy Spirit guides us to TRUTH. Read about what happened to the people in Noah's day, where did their disbelief get them. You need to decide for yourself and put your trust in a Higher Power, the God Almighty even if you can't comprehend, understand. That's why The Lord gives us Faith if we ask.

The Rapture doctrine is very flawed and non-biblical.

The rapture is when the angels will sound trumpets, to announce the return of Jesus Christ, to take up those who are Born Again. Scripture tells us that he will come to take the quick (the living) and the dead. First, those who have died, will rise up and join Jesus in the sky, closely followed by the living. The rapture will complete the promise of eternal life and insure the believers place in heaven. Jesus told his disciples to be sure that they were prepared, for, no one knows the date or time, but, the Father alone. To be Born again one must: First, understand that we are all sinners and in need of forgiveness. Second, believe, by faith, that Jesus Christ died on the cross as the only living sacrifice for our sins. Third, we are to repent (or turn away from our sins), ask Jesus Christ to forgive our sins, and, fill us with the Holy Spirit, becoming the Lord of our life. And, Fourth, to believe, By Faith, that our sins have been forgiven. Simple, admit our sinful nature, understand the sacrifice, repent of our sins and believe we are forgiven. Then you are called "A new creature in Christ". At the rapture, all of those who have obtained that "Personal relationship with Jesus Christ" will go home with him in glory, for all time.
I hope I have made, what some people find difficult, easy for you to understand.
God Bless!

This concept of Rapture isn't anything new to the ancient Chinese, Tibetans and Indians, these teachings were already existent in Buddhist, Taoists and Hindu scriptures between 4th cen bc- 6th cent bc
Physical ascension to the Higher planes have been known to happen in stories, legends and fables of Great Yogic Hermits with their disciples.... or the great Mahasiddhas. Where the teacher and his 500disciples are seen physically ascending to the heavens.
So the bible's story of rapture isn't anything new to the eastern cultures

the rapture is real. it is more of an analogy though. it is when god takes up our souls into the clouds to wait because god gives everyone a second chance. that is in The Bible. I don't know if it will be like Left Behind or anything like that but who knows...? If God can part the Red Sea, he can do anything.

The rapture has its roots in misreadings of revelation, wishful thinking, and a big part in dispensationalism, which is based on a vision a Catholic girl in Scotland had in the 1800's.
The Revelation makes it clear that there will be no "get out of apocalypse free" cards given to Christians. In fact, because of the fact that Christians will be down there suffering along with everyone, the Revelation makes it clear that God will cut everything short, and bring everyone to final judgment earlier, so that they may not suffer as much (but they will still suffer along with everyone else!)
However, take that with a big grain of salt, because people tend to take the Revelation as prophecy, which it is, but they don't truly understand what prophecy is.
Prophecy, most people tend to see as fortune and future telling. That, is only a teeny tiny function of a Prophet. A Prophet primarily speaks about the present, guiding people to walk the path that God has for them, speaking His word. Revelation is primarily a call for action NOW. We need to get off our lazy butts and start serving God, Christ, and our fellow man NOW, instead of putting it off for later.

Rapture means to be taken up. It is a real word and is not mentioned in the bible as rapture, but the meaning to be taken up to meet Jesus in the clouds is mentioned in the Bible and that is the modern word that is used for that.
