Be honest.

Is it because of what you believe god has done for you... given you life, created the universe, kept the sun shining and the earth spinning?

Is it because of what you believe god will give you when you die?

Is it because you fear what would happen if you didn't respect god?

Is it because god is just so great and "godly?"

I'm genuinely curious. The reason is ask because I find myself incapable of respecting something simply through faith, which is all anyone has as evidence for gods works.

In fact, I find it contemptible that any being would try to garner respect through what can only be described as coercive methods.

I guess that's why even if such a being actually appeared to prove its existence, I would still reject it.

God has my respect just by being Him, most importantly. He also has my respect because He created. All the reasons you asked about in your question are all good reasons.

I respect God because when I hit rock bottom, the only way to look was up, and guess who I ran into? God made Himself REALLY evident and I couldn't seem to get away.

Once you've acknowledged that there IS a God, you learn pretty quickly how he cares for you, and then you can't help but respect that. I don't know how or why exactly God continues to love us when we so clearly have fallen short of His expectations, but if anyone can love me that much, I can't help but love them back.

There's a lot more evidence of God's work than just faith, but when it comes down to it, you'll explain everything away... so it usually does come down to just faith.

You don't strike me as the type who'd walk into a church to ask questions, so try this: find a copy of "The Case For Faith" by Lee Strobel. He was an atheist journalist who started asking Christians really tough questions, and by gathering FACTS (not just theological opinions), he believed and became a Christian.

The book is easy to follow, it's not boring, and it answers a ton of questions. I read it right after becoming a Christian when I was having trouble swallowing stuff "by faith", and I learned a lot. It helped me to know there's solid reasons to believe, not just the hope of something better.

I respect God for what He has done for me personally. I worship Him and serve Him because He died for me that I may have life. The bible says to have a godly fear. He doesn't want you to be scared of Him because He isn't a mean God like some people portray Him to be. He is kind loving and merciful. That is why I love and respect Him. I would serve Him if there were no issue of Heaven or Hell, simply because He loves me and has been so good to me.
I don't understand if He appeared before you face to face why you would reject someone that loves you so very much. He died for you. Who do you know that would do that? Even in our sin and our shortcomings, He loves us anyway. He knew you before the foundation of the world and chose to die for you and would have done it if you were the only one in the world. He knew before you were born that you would feel this way and reject Him and loves you still. I hope you find peace with God. He really is so wonderful!

We tend to believe that whatever good happens to us it was willed by God. We thank God if we escape tragedy, disease, or bad weather. But when tragedy strikes and we do not conquer disease, or when the hurricane kills and destroys, who do we blame?

It stands to reason that when a calamity occurs, such as an earthquake, someone is killed and someone escapes unscathed. This is always the case. If during an earthquake all people were killed, it would be highly unusual, and there would be no one left to thank God! The reverse would be also unusual and improbable. When a terrible earthquake strikes, buildings collapse and people who happen to be there get killed. All this is explainable by reasoning. It does not require misticism. It does not require an intelligent super-being somewhere in the universe who is drumming up these natural events. The same can be said for rare diseases, for epidemics, for floods, volcanic eruptions, and so on. We feel so lucky to escape disasters, we think someone has looked after us and protected us. But that is simply a trick of our mind to make us feel secure, because if we can believe that we were protected once, we can hope that we will continue to be protected again.

I'm with you Ninja. All I see are these parasites getting things for which for which they didn't work. Here I am with working hard depsite disabilities---epilepsy and learning disability, but no one will give me a break. I have accomplished a lot of obstacles, but am still home working in a restaurtant and am not even getting to work 40 hours a week due to not having the # of customers we once had. Despite having going through having a lot of seizures in the late ''90's, I missed a day of from '95 or '99. I just want a career in computers and a Section 8 apartment to start off, but people won't give me the chance.

It is because He loves me.

He gave His Son's life for me and even though Jesus, could have called a multitude of angels to rescue Him. He didn't. He willfully gave His life for me and you.

You say that you are incapable of accepting Him through faith. You have faith in something. Is it yourself, is it other people?

He has proven His existance. He came to the earth as a man, God's only begotten Son, Jesus. He was even rejected when He came to the earth in the flesh and was just like us.

To reject Him is your choice. He has given you free will.

People from the beginning of time have preserved stories of God and his wonders. Who God is has been recorded throughout history with many prophets and followers who died for their faith and belief. That has to mean something. If it worked for them, it will work for me and there is no reason to doubt the existence of God when the things of God are clearly seen by nature itself. There is a higher power behind all that we have here on earth. You are without excuse.

Well, there is no God that I've ever been able to see. If the one in the Bible were real, I would have no respect for him at all! I mean, he kills people by the hundreds and thousands, or commands others to do it in his name. When dictators do that, we call them monsters, evil, etc., and we do whatever we can to stop them. Why would I worship a deity that behaves far worse than any human ever could?? The only reason I could think of would be fear--I'd be terrified of what that deity might do to me if I didn't worship him. Fear does not equal respect. There is no way anyone could respect a God who would throw them into a pit of fire for all eternity, where they would scream and cry and wail and writhe and their flesh would burn off--all because they didn't worship him! What kind of monster would do such a thing??

well, the universe is pretty awesome. it's better than that, it's amazing. the absolute grandeur of it is stunning and inspiring. its impossible to describe just how magnificent the universe is. one minute you think you've wrapped your mind around the wonder of it all, and the next you see a picture of a sparkling galaxy millions of light-years away and you're blown away all over again. and the feeling you get when confronted with the splendour of creation is nothing, it is less than nothing, it is a mere pittance, when compared to how you must then feel when thinking about G-d, who is the source of every awe-inspiring atom there is. respect G-d? how could i not?

2. His Holiness the Dalai Lama
3. Oprah

for having brought inspiration, comfort, peace, love, hope and joy into the lives of millions, something which unfortunately cannot do yet but aspire towards
