Lego Mindstorms is always a good thing to go for. Easy to find, not too expensive (as far as robotics go), simple yet flexible designs, and very easy to program. As a cruel marketing ploy by Lego, you can even get more Lego robot computers (the brains that make the robots run) and program them to communicate together, being able to form a more intelligent and flexible robot. Get enough brains together (as well as motors, sensors, and legos), and it's very possible for you to build your own independent Lego android. :)

How cheap and what do you intend to do with it?
The Lego Mindstorms NXT is a general purpose robotics system with different sensors and motors:

Alternately, the BASIC Stamp series is the processor used for robots in competitions, but there's a lot more of tinkering required to construct the sensors and actuators:

purchase the two! you are able to communicate with different lego pers...via the computing device .....perchance purchase the Legos first and shop for the computing device they are especially actual looking now. troublesome yet relaxing question. by potential of how, I surely have a chum and he or she's been into legos consistently and he or she in basic terms have been given the robotics invention equipment and he or she is almost 40 years previous! good success.
