Jennifer, really, you can't keep cats from doing anything, apparently they don't have you properly trained yet!!! LOL....They do what they want and when they want...just close your bedroom door, remove breakables from the rest of the house and hope for the best....really.....that's what we do...she does something naughty every night...she is a brat, but gets away with all of it!!!! It's a part of the cat contract...it is their house not yours....!!!!

Playing with them for a while before you go to bed is a good idea. You might want to get some catnip and put some in a couple of old white socks. Make them play with that for a while. Or, try getting a spray bottle, put some water in it. Put the nozzle on stream and let em have it in the face. Cats hate water in their faces. Just don't drown them tho. My cat is 12 years old and she gets her nights where she will raise cane. I just have to show her the bottle and she peels out. Doesn't wake me up after that! Cats are nocturnal, they will sleep most of the day away and party hardy at night. That's the way it goes. Other than that, I think you will have to get used to it. Sorry :(

Get out the cat toys and run them ragged right before you go to bed..... but I suggest you lock the bedroom door and buy earplugs or a white noise machine. The 3am crazies is part of being a cat I'm afraid.

Give them some cat toys to play with.
Catnip is also a good thing to calm them down. Fresh works best. I've also heard that catnip spray (sold in pet stores) works well.

Cats are naturally nocturnal. To help keep their waking schedule more on par with yours maybe you should play with them an hour or so before bedtime so that way they got their playing done and now want to sleep with you

I love some of the answers here, especially hah's. Might I add that cats are most intelligent and in tune with their human pets. They have all sorts of "cultural" rules and expectations, and they most certainly understand that YOU do, too. If you scold them mightily about it, they will understand how rude they are being. Whenever I have to raise my voice at my cats for being barbarians, they actually apologize in their own ways. They know better. THEY don't like rude stuff. You have to let them know what is unacceptable to you and what YOUR rules of living together are. They'll abide, if they love you.

When you get home from work, get out their favorite toy (only use at that time each day) and play like crazy for thirty minutes or so. Then, by your bed time they should be tired. Good luck!

Just leave the back door open so they can go outside
and hang out for a while then cruise home when there
finished.
