My nail turned black one time after I slammed it in the door. It fell off in a couple weeks. The one thing I do remember is PAIN! You have to puncture the nail with a red hot sterilized sewing needle to drain the blood which causes it to be black. If she is not in pain then she didnt slam it in a door. If thats not it, I would ask her doctor ASAP!

does she have a nail fungus?
there are lots of ways you can get a fungus on your nails.. and they arn't all the "thick yellow" kind.. some are green. some are brown, some are black.. did the Dr. check for this?
if you think Dr. might not have been thorough enough in this area.. take her to a local, well-experienced salon nail tech.
she can probably tell you if its a fungus or not.
If it is, you will want to catch it before it spreads to other fingers.

It could be either a fungus or a blood clot. If your doctor is unsure you need to find another doctor for a second opinion just in case it is an infection you don't want it to spread any further.

Did she slam it in a door? Get frostbite? My friend slammed his toe in the door and it turned black/blue, and the nail fell off.
If it's not either of those, then I'm stumped.

She probably needs to see another docter. It could be because of the lack of a certain nutrient.
