Why wasn't the school watching the child more closely? I mean, how could he have gotten hurt? How do we not know the teacher wasn't jerking him around? We've had more abusive teachers arrested in our school district than abusive parents.
bwahahah. There are more than one way to judge this whole thing. But I'm in a cranky mood so I'm going to play devil's advocate.
I could probably say some things about the mom too, but I just have to comment on how everyone just LOVES to villify her. Some of the stuff is probably wrong, leaving a six year old with a twelve year old is not okay (But why doesn't the state provide day care for a single mom with low income? Where's her help in a society that is more than willing to condemn her?) Why do we assume neglect for a dirty child? I have kids. I have two kids who are very stubborn about what they wear (only their favorite oldest worn out clothes, no matter how much I push the drawer full of new stuff). Love and Logic parenting (www.loveandlogic.com), which our school pushes VERY hard (they even use the teachers version for the entire school) would say if a kid wants to wear shorts in the winter, let him. he'll learn about wearing weather appropriate clothing. Kids get dirty really quick, I've seen my boys get muddy and nasty just walking from the front door to the truck. The child has been at school for some part of the day, maybe he got dirty during crafts or recess (since he did just fall over and get hurt...hello!)
If she has a job that she intends to retain to save her family, she HAS to look nice and present herself well.
The whole assumption about bad parenting based on several facts which may or may not be related makes me sick. It may be true that she's neglectful, but no one on this website KNOWS this person, and yet she's already condemned. Judge not lest ye be judged, I read that somewhere, in a dusty book that some people have forgotten about.

it is very unfair to judge. Perhaps the mother does need to be talked to by the teacher or some other community member who cares about the boy, about him being dirty and needs to be properly dressed for the winter.
Why is the staff discussing this? Is this a child endangerment issue? He fell over and has minimal injury and this question sounds more like gossip than anything else.

im not understanding the point of this or the question here
the child was brought in by a teacher so he got hurt at school
mom is dressed for work
the child is dressed for school and dirty from playing
so what turn her in for being poor??
its not aginst the law it does not make her a bad parent

I wouldn't assume anything.
I would, however, recognize the truth: this child is not being properly cared for. This is truth because we know for a fact he's left without an adult at least 3 nights per week.

Did his wrist get hurt at home or school? they don't have running water soap or a comb and the mother can't afford winter clothes?Well if the mother is dressed real nice then at least you can asume that she is probably not on drugs .
