so how can you explain what Jesus said?

"And a ruler asked him (Jesus), 'Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?/ And Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.'" (Luke 18:18-19)

Luke 18:18-29

The Rich Ruler
18A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
19"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone. 20You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'[a]"

21"All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said.

22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

23When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. 24Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

26Those who heard this asked, "Who then can be saved?"

27Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

28Peter said to him, "We have left all we had to follow you!"

29"I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life."

Cute trick taken out of context you almost got a point. But you fail to see the point of what Jesus is teaching here. He is basicly saying "Hey buddy, if IM soo good then give away all you have and follow me." Jesus had already seen what was in his heart and that his word were only flattery and not sincere.

Here is one example as there are many in the bible when Jesus was merely giving the credit to his father. He came down to the earth so that people of all nations may come to know the true God and to declare God's Kingdom to all mankind. Jesus loved his father so much that he gave his life so that all men may come to know about the father in the heavens.

Here when this ruler asked Jesus what he should do to inherit everlasting life. Jesus told this man to obey the commandments given to Moses. Jesus also told him to sell all the things he has and distribute them to the poor, and you will have treasures in the heavens; and come be my follower.
These were two things this man, yet needed to do. He was not giving to the poor. Remember this man was wealthy, he was a ruler of that time, verse 18 says. This man was not following Jesus and becoming one of his disciples. That takes humility. Just like little children, we need to be teachable and meek and mild. This man evidentally was not at this point yet in his life where he could follow Jesus and give up his worldy possesions. Jesus mentioned it would be difficult for those having money to make their way into the kingdom of God.

Jesus knew that the ruler didn't know who he was, so He spoke as a man. Jesus was not denying he was God anymore than He was denying He was good. The point Jesus was trying to make is that compared to God, no man is good. The point was relevant to the question because the ruler was asking "what shall I do" as if under the impression that one could earn his way to heaven by doing good. Jesus was actually answering the man's question before He even did just by making that point. In other words what Jesus was trying to get across to him was "Don't think it works that way . No one is able to earn their way to heaven by being good enough because really only God is good."

But the ruler didn't pick up on the hint Jesus was trying to give. It seemed to go right past him.

I was confused about this as well when I read it, but I have a study bible that expands on what verses mean, and this is what it says about Luke 18:18-19...

"Jesus' question to the leader who came and called him 'Good teacher' was, in essence, 'Do you know who I am?' Undoubtedly the man did not catch the implications of Jesus' reply - that the man was right in calling him good because Jesus is truly God."

Jesus had not yet finished his work here on earth when he said that. After he finished his work which was dieing on the cross so we could be blessed with both the Resurrection and his taking upon himself our sins if we would believe in him. Then he went to sit upon the right hand of God and was gave all that the father had. Another words he was not as yet equal to the Father and still gives all glory to God not himself.

The interpetation is probably off. I researched and found that in the Bible were it says Grace be to you from Jesus christ and God the Father it actually said in it's original Hebrew text even God the Father.

I have no idea where some Christians came up with that, except by misunderstanding when Jesus said that he and his father were one. He obviously meant in one accord on their message, God's message that Jesus was bringing to the world.

When Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, was that God praying to God?

When Jesus referred to God as "my father," does that mean God has a father?

Jesus often said, "my God," does that mean God has a God?

When he was dying on the cross and cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" does that mean God forsook himself?

Did God offer himself as a sacrifice to himself to save humanity from his own wrath?

If God is eternal, how can he die?

This whole Jesus-is-God idea is really stupid, since it puts God in the position of talking to himself, worshipping himself, and killing himself. Also, there are Old Testament passages telling us that God is not a man, nor is he the son of man; Jesus was a man and often called himself "son of man." Did God lie when he inspired the O.T. verses?

Jesus' question "Why do you call me good" was meant as Do you realize who you are calling Good? And that the man was right in calling Jesus Good, because no one is good except God. That Jesus is truly God. Jesus IS Lord!

That goodness comes from God. Notice the next verse talks about the commandments, that should be a clue.
