We live in a prefab where the furnace is kept in the hallway outside of the living room. it is really loud when it kicks in. We don't have a basement, just a crawlspace. Is there anyway to move the furnace or get a quieter one?

It is the blower cycling on and off causing the noise. I was just wondering what other options I may have.

Is it gas or electric? How old? There are very quiet models out there. What you are hearing is probably the blower cycling on and off. You can buy furnace systems that are in your attic if you have an attic.

Are there any obvious sources of noise that might be fixed.......bad bearings?.....loose panels or unsupported duct work.? Would it be possible to line the closet with sound absorbing material ( try Home Depot) without danger of it igniting?
Just a few things to consider

Good luck

Not sure. Do you really need it? Have you considered picking up a baseball bat and banging the heck out of it in the middle of the night?
