In all honesty, I don't trust "sleeping pills." So, if I have trouble sleeping, I take benadryl. Usually has the added benefit of clearing my sinuses, too (which can be part of the problem in the first place.)
I take a lot of different types of prescriptions for various things and this was recommended to me by my doctor as something that was safe to take in combination with most drugs (you should, of course, check with your doctor or pharmicist about potential drug interactions.)
At any rate, since one of the problems you're having is itching, benadryl will also probably be a good choice because it's an anti-histamine (often suggested for itching related to hives, etc.)
It's also available over the counter and in generic form, so it's very affordable.

Ativan will help you sleep. It's not a sleeping tablet, but it will let you sleep more than just 3-4 hours. It will also calm you down so you won't be preoccupied with thinking about the accident. And it will cause the discomfort from the cast and itching to subside; I wear a back brace to bed, and take Ativan 1mg/night and I can sleep until my alarm goes off.

Rozarem! Rozarem! Ask your doctor about Rozarem!
It's the commercial with Abraham Lincoln and the Beaver and cosmonaut, etc....
I've had much success! It's not as expensive either!
Sorry but... As you know, most people experience problems sleeping two or more times a week. And this is what it's made for, normal people. It's a synthetic version of melatonin, expertly made by Takeda in Japan. I hate to sound like a shill, but it really works well, and you will NOT get dependent on it.

I have good results with an over the counter supplement called Melatonin. It's harmless and is a synthetic version of the chemical our body produces when it's time to sleep. It doesn't always last thru the night but you can take more if you wake up. My doctor said you could take the whole bottle without serious effects (but does not recommend it!) I never wake up with that sleeping pill "stupid" hangover from it.

I use a strictly herbal tea blend for helping me sleep. Take a teaspoon of valerian and a teaspoon of chamomile and steep in boiled water for about 5 minutes. Sweeten with honey. If you find the taste objectionable you may add a flavored tea bag (lemon, orange or mint work well). Drink one or two cups of this and you will soon find yourself waking up in the morning quite refreshed. No side effects, and cheaper than prescription drugs and an office visit to your physician.

Wal-Mart has a store brand that is inexpensive, works well and you don't wake up groggy the next morning.
I don't work there or own stock or anything. It just works.
