A long time if you do some preventive maintenance to it. Have the timing belt replaced, this is the #1 thing that can leave you stranded do this every 60,000 miles( if its never been changed then around 100,000 plus miles it will break), change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles, Change the Transmission fluid every 30,000 miles for Automatic and every 50,000 stick shift. Do this and they last a long time. Change the plugs at 100,000 miles and put platinum plugs back in.

I own a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis (Ford Crown Vic) that has 150K miles. Runs like new. On your Escort, just make sure you stay on top of the timing belt change, as a broken belt really makes a mess of your engine. other than that, change the oil every 5K or so and tune it up every 100K. Should last you another 100-110K or so.

Dont let it get hot...I mean overheated. Also, you are due for a timing belt anytime. Don't take a chance on that because you could tear up other internal parts if you wait for it to break before you have it replaced. That car should be fine other than that. I had several of these cars and as long as you do not have an overheating problem they generally hold up well with good regular service.
Good luck

Maintenance is the key. We had a Sable that went through 3 generations and then my daughter sold it to a family friend. Had over 200,000 mi on it and never had any engine problems with it. But maintenance was always done. Belts, oil changes, trans fluid flushes, tires, and brakes.
If you invest a few dollars now, it'll save you in the long run. Good luck.

I don't mean to discourage you but two members of my family both had Ford Escorts and both members regretted buying them. Do a little research on your own. I won't go into details but If I owned it I would have a Plan B ready for when the big day comes.

Change your oil every 3,000 miles (5,000 kms.) and your timing belt as well as drive belt every 60,000 miles (100,000 kms.) and you'll be fine. Broken rear springs are a common failure on Escorts. Other than that, just keep up with maintenance, and you'll be fine. I own a 1995 Crown Victoria with 350,000 kms. on it still going strong, not burning a drop of oil, and with EVERY accessory including A/C still working well.

As long as you keep it maintained on a good consistant schedule I wouldn't see why you would have any problems.
