answers 1 and 2 are wrong. Whereas you CAN buy medals for pretty cheap (and do not confuse them with the less expensive ribbons), some are worth outrageous amounts of money. For example, an early Victoria Cross medal is worth quite a bit (of course, "quite a bit" can depend on your own perspective). I would take them to more than one antique militaria dealers and ask their opinion but make it clear from the outset that you are not selling them or they will underprice it to their advantage. You must know exactly what it is you have first, is it a first (at least British ones will have a name engraved along the side) or replacement. Good luck.

Look at the prices these medals sold for and then still say they are not worth much:

This might have something. Either way, it's interesting:

The medals themselves aren't worth much of anything money wise. It's the actions of the individual that earned them that give them worth.

Also certain US medals like the Medal of Honor can't have a price put on them as they are a felony to buy or sell.

Go to a military Exchange or PX. For insurance? They can be replaced unless they are from the civil war or something. Medals can all be purchased for under $100. Maybe make your question clearer, but medals are easy to replace.
