I bought 2 gallons of milk (expiration date 3-6-07) last week and brought it directly home from the store. I am pregnant and was craving a glass of milk so I literally chugged a glass down! After I was finished I was overcome with the strong after taste of rotten eggs! I smelled the gallon of milk and it did not smell sour but a strong rotten egg smell. I threw that gallon out and opened the other one to find the same horrible smell. I wonder if there was something wrong with the cows? Do you think the milk can cause listeria or other food bourne illness that could harm my baby? Do you think I should contact Dean Milk or Meijer to find out what went wrong with the milk? The milk was not left out of fridge! haha what are my milk rights!

I'll bet that the milk had been frozen or mis-marked! By all means take it back to where you got it from and get a refund!

Well, the fact is that you are pregnant. And sometimes dairy doesn't have to smell sour to have harmful bacteria in it, or even be past the expiry date. I've had milk like this before. Because you are pregnant, even the slightest bit of bad bacteria could cause something. If you still have that other gallon of milk, you should go back to the store you bought it from and get a refund, or if you want more of a detailed explanation then you could contact the manufacturer of that milk. Not sure what it could be that caused the smell that it could be anything like maybe something wrong with the cows like you mentioned, but it probably isn't a risk to take while you are pregnant. And if you start feeling sick as well, then you should go to see a doctor. I don't think that that milk could cause listeria or contain anything to harm your baby, but if you are really worried that it could happen, go to see your doctor to be safe.

I don't know about you, but both times I was pregnant my sense of smell was incredibly heightened. I remember one night my husband had been out working on the car, then he and his father in law went out for greasy hamburgers after. I was tired, so I went on to bed. He came home, washed his face, brushed his teeth, scrubbed his hands with Lava soap, changed into his PJs and crawled in bed, and I nearly threw up. He REEKED of onions and car exhaust. We got up and nobody else noticed it, but I swear I could smell it!

My point is, maybe you're smelling something that's in the plastic of the milk container? Or maybe it's the little bit of dried milk that forms around the cap where you screw it on? (When you smell milk, you're always supposed to pour it in a glass and smell it that way. That milk that dries on to the top of the milk container will smell sour when it dries.)

Do you still have the milk? If so, smell it again and see if it's the same today. You'll also need to save the carton to get the lot/plant number off of it.

If I were you, I'd start with Meijer. Call them and ask if they've had any recalls on milk. If they don't know, then call the milk company and complain to them. Just my personal opinion, but I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding listeria (or any other illness). I think you and baby will be just fine. :) You may get some free milk out of it though when you call the milk company to complain. Make sure you really play up the fact that you're pregnant and their milk was spoiled, etc. etc. :D

i seriously seriously doubt that there was anything wrong with the cows or that they had any other food bourne illnesses since milk is pasteurized to kill any bacteria. you should contact meijer and bring the empty bottles and your receipt and they will refund your money. there could be something wrong on their end as far as the refrigerator is concerned or something stored next to milk in the cooler. don't make a big deal out of it, just politely bring it back and tell them what happened. you're fine. i understand your concern but don't over react.

First off, call your OB. Tainted milk can be harmful. Then take the milk back to Meijer because they will want to know they were supplied with a bad product. They will return your money and then take care of business with Dean Milk themselves.

It might have been out of refidgeration before it got to the store. You could call the company who made it and tell them. They would probably send you coupons for another milk free to replace it.

Ewwwww, rotten cow juice- Just another reason to make that healthy switch to soy or rice milk. Take it back, you also might want to notify the health department to keep other people from getting sick.

The milk was probably just bad. As long as you don't get sick then your baby should be fine.
