I am moving to NYC in a few months and am having to rely entirely on finding an apartment through the Internet.I've been to the city before and am somewhat familiar with the neighborhoods. However, I'm still not quite sure of where to live or if I am overlooking a great place.I am a female who will be living by myself and I would like to feel safe in my home, as well as coming and going at all times of the day.

There are plenty of safe areas in NYC. Most of what you have probably heard regarding crime in NYC is based on Hollywood fiction. There are of course areas that are not so safe but it's easy to avoid those areas. Just use common sense and you should have no problem.

Affordable is another story. Housing cost are INSANE and it is difficult to find housing at any cost. Also,If you own an automobile I would advise you to sell it before moving here as it will be very expensive to park it.

Some areas that I would suggest looking into would include Astoria and Sunnyside in Queens both of which are a quick 10 minute train ride from Manhattan and have lots of shops, supermarkets, restaraunts and bars. Both neighborhoods have diverse populations, including many young people new to NYC.

my best advice is to live near the subway - and on a block that has shops or restaurants that are always open so you never walk alone. new york is huge, and though its very safe these days, the crazies hang out everywhere not just the ghettos. depending on your budget, generally the closer to downtown the more populated and weathy, and therefor safer the neighborhood.

None of the New York City will be safe a bunch unless your a millionaire or huge muscled up guy. Get a truck load of mace and a stun gun and think about moving to the Adirondacks mountains like Malone New york

Also try this site: www.citytowninfo.com they'll let you compare areas similarity.

I would recommend East Harlem (near 96th st). It is considerably safer now...
