if you must use store bought product, then use loreal. it's the only one that also has a high end professional line. you shouldn't have too much trouble. choose a medium brown with an ash base.

It is best to go to a hair stylist. They can analyze the condition of your hair. The last thing you would want to do is overprocess the hair. You would also need to look at the color base. Stay within the color base. It's preferable to go with a semi-permanent color within the same color base look at the ingredients on the back label to find out. You can go darker with an semi-permanent until you give your hair a little more time in between permanent color.

Do not try to use another store bought product, you don't know what color you will end up with next. Go to a professional salon and have them strip the color out. I'm a stylist, so I know about what over the counter products do to hair and have seen on hand what it does to your hair when you try to mix colors to hair.
