it's ok..it happens sometimes...
you should just feel confident about your position .
make sure you are underneath the ball and don't swing your arms..
and for when you hit..confidence is everything...
just go for the ball and hit it...if it goes out it..OK..w/practice you'll improve [topspin -make your wrist loose]

Okay okay. For one. you are still on the team. That means something. The back middle is the quarterback on the defense. And you are the defense.
You may not have the jumping power or height for the net positions. Besides every team needs a good stopper.
You've also got the toughest job. But I think your feeling self conscious. The coach wouldn't put you there if he/she didn't feel you were doing a bad job. And you are the best one for the job or he/she wouldn't put you there huh.
But return serve in volley ball where you are is very hard. Remember your job is to get to the ball, get it under control and set up either the front row or for a second strike. Don't even think of hitting over the net unless you have the last/third touch.
And if you are in the back sometimes you can get in on the net play by coming up to the net on a set up.
Ask someone on the boys/mens volleyball team to help you train. Often the guys like to practice serve. Guys just love serving the ball. It soothes their ego. Do extra practice trying to return serve.
They hit it harder and twist the ball better so you can get to know how the ball curves and be able to anticipate angles and spin on the ball. For the first few practice sessions you may not even get to some of the serves. Don't give up its only practice. After awhile you'll just get better and better. When you get to game. You'll eat them alive.
Also in league games take notes mental or otherwise of how individual players on the opposing sides tend to serve, where they serve it and does it twist. Even whether they are right or left handed.
They will think you a little nuts. Trust me this will work. Concentrate on simply keeping the ball off the ground and into the air straight up or to just your side of the net above the top. You don't have to hit it back over.
If you get the second strike. Do your job. Keep a track in your head of how your front net players tend to play. Try to pass that ball right to where they can slam it over.
You'll do well. I know you will because you want to.

The main thing about playing in the back row is to own it, you need to act unafraid (even if you are just acting) not only will you feel better about your playing (you will play better too) but you will also intimidate the others on the team. When I first learned to play back row I learned something called the triangle method basiclly you move your feet constantly in a triangle this keeps you on your toes and low to the ground, this also helps in distracting the server. But you really don't need a type of method to move as long as you constantly move if you watch the best back row players they are constantly moving. Also don't forget to call the ball, don't be afraid to be a ball hog in the back row especially back middle. You are controlling the tempo of that play, so have confidence in yourself, I know backrow isn't what seems to be the "glory position" but nonetheless you are the glory player so own that back row. Your team could help out too, the bench could always do something to distract the server. Don't worry you seem very dedicated and that is key to the backrow position, you are gonna love it. There is nothing like picking up serves whey your opponent thinks they are going to ace it or picking it up so many times that the server causes a sideout.

You have to be competitive, and don't be afraid to go for the ball. When you return a serve, either position in the cup position and aim for your forearms when you return it. The other way which is better for closer returns, hitting the ball with the tips of all your fingers. That way is more accurate, but the other way is for longer returns.
