We got caught speeding but there were no speed limit signs. Does this make it our fault?

ignorance is no excuse but, you must have been going awfully fast. I didn't think your car could get impounded unless you're like 30 miles over the speed limit

You got caught speeding - so that means that there was a speed limit. Regardless of signs or not...your training manual told you the maximum hiway speeds, the in city speeds, and school/playground speed if there are no visible signs.
So, you are at fault.
And yes, the police can do that(and more-like a safety check)if they are in a "mood".

no but common sense would tell you that you know you are speeding and going way past the speeding limit. he shouldve taken your license. you are lucky thats all you got, you couldve hit someone or something and gotten hurt seriously. they dont have to be posted, you should already know about what the legal speed limit was. how dare you!!! if you were driving that fast of course you wouldnt have seen any. thats the problem with you teens these days.

Excuse me? Whose fault do you think it is? How fast were you going that they wanted to impound the car? It sounds like you were going fast enough to exceed any possible speed limit in the country.

Each state has a stipulated speed limit on highways, city limits, and out of city limits. Therefore, if there are no signs stating otherwise, those state laws apply. Ask to go to traffic school so you don't get points on your license.

Well, there are state laws that state the Max speed where none is posted. Usually 45 MPH is the maximum non-residential limit when there are no signs. Sorry.

My understanding (never happened to me) is that if you are exceeding the speed limit (whether you knew it or not is irrelevant) by a certain large amount, the police have to arrest you and tow your car away.

yes they can impound it,and there had to be a sign somewhere you might not have seen it,but they always have it posted,so you must have been flying if they impounded your car also,id say there was a sign somewhere ,and you just didn't see it,good luck.
