Well, a welders bench has a lot of small pieces of slag stuck to it and a few dimples from hot stuff burning small holes in it if that helps.

well. we strike an arc..

or we hit the trigger on a mig set, just like a doctor squeezing the syringe... and its easier to shorten the wire for welding than clipping it with snips...

and for some reason we use a convenient piece of scrap, and withhin days its covered in lumps of weld, and bits of wire...

ive spent most of my adult life welding, and ive never heard that expression... but having seen welders benches, they must have a face for radio...
