That depends on your point of view.

If it is you that is praying, then you should recognize that you are approaching a being who should seem awesome; not in the popular sense, but a being that inspires a feeling of awe within you. If you were to meet a person who you have great respect for, you would likely be respectful, and such should be the case when approaching deity.

If it is others who are praying, you should be respectful in the recognition that they are doing something which should instill feelings of respect in yourself. Being disruptive when others are praying shows disdain for that act, and disdain for those performing it.

Whether or not you believe in the efficacy of prayer, recognizing it as a spiritual act is simply good manners. If others are praying and you disrupt them with sentiments of superiority because you don't believe is akin to someone disrupting a fictitious movie because it's not historical fact. It's simply bad manners.

The same reason you would be respectful any other time. Because you are not the only person on earth.

Be respectful specifically during prayer because people are doing something that is important to them.

Because in prayer, we are speaking to the crieator of the universe. If we were speaking to the Prime Minister of Canada, or the President of the United States, we would tend to be respectful, no matter what we thought of that person: because of his position. How much more should we be respectful of the Creator!

Even if you do not believe in the God that is being prayed to, someone that is in the prayer does believe. It isn't so much being respectful to the God that you may or not believe in, but it's also being respectful to the people around you. Being respectful in prayer doesn't require you to be praying. But, it simply means that you are quiet and still while others are trying to communicate with their god.

Why shouldn't you be respectful during prayer? To do otherwise reveals a person of cloddish manners, no consideration for others, and a lack of reverence as needed.

I find it hard to believe that you'd ask such a question in the first place.

Because prayer is talking to God.
Are you respectful when you ask something of your earthly father?
Same goes for your Heavenly Father - magnified!
Hope that give you a good start to your essay - all the best.

Because that is the kind of person you are and your mother taught you well.

Respect for someone praying is the same as respect for two people in a conversation, where one of them is the superior of the other. If you saw two people having an obvious conversation of intense interest to both of them, would you begin harrassing one of them, just to make them mad ... for no reason other than you dislike the fact that they are speaking?

In the book of revelations Jesus comes back on a white horse to create a new heaven and new earth;it says KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS;;;He is a king and the priest of the universe and God;so this is a good reason to bow to our King as He deserves.

Because your imaginary friend might get angry and not be your friend anymore. Then he won't let you into Happy Rainbow Land to live with the angels and pixies and Care Bears forever. You wouldn't want that to happen, now would you?
