I have to get rid of my dog. Is there any place I can give him away without them killing him?
I live in East Tx. Near Tyler,

He is a long haired chihuahua. He is very well mannered. VERY SMART! I just am at school all day and he is left alone. Which isn't fair to him at all. Poor baby. I love him , but he needs more attention

Here's a site with a list of no-kill shelters in Texas. Some shelters are forced to euthanize animals, so look for a no-kill shelter. You can also pass the word to your friends and maybe even place an add in a local paper for giving your dog away to a good home. Make sure you interview the prospective owner to make she he's going to a responsible person.,

Most dogs will adapt pretty well to being left alone during the day if they are getting attention and being let out enough in the morning and evening. If you're really concerned about the dog, get hold of a chihuahua rescue group rather than putting it in a shelter. Not really the best of places, esp. for a little dog, and they really don't get much attention there.

My thoughts on this as I read all of the other answers. Humane societies don't euthanize animals unless it's absolutely necessary. If the dog is vicious or very ill, then it will be put down. I would say to run and ad in the newspaper. Does any of your local newspapers have free ads? How about making a flyer saying that you can't keep him and are looking for a good home for him. Put them up in stores all around your area. Ask friends to see if they can help you find the dog a home. Maybe their parents will know of someone who is looking for a nice little dog. I hope you will be able to find him a good home. I hope too that my advice will help you.

If your really want to get rid of your dog, put up some ads in
local pet stores. But even though you are in school all day,
many people have pets who work or go to school all day and
leave their pets at home. As long as your dog has toys, food,
and water while your gone, it really should be ok. Just spend
quality time with your pet when you get home. Beleive me, it's
much harder for your pet to feel comfortable in a new home, than
it is to be left alone. But if you intend on getting rid of him, than
just put up some ads in stores and someone will take him.

He is a puppy? Poor baby. Is there a store near you like "Pet Co" or some place where they specialize in selling dog food and pet supplies? Go there and ask the manager if you can stand outside offering you puppy to a good home. I know people do that here. Once someone sees the little guy they will fall in love with him. You can question them to be sure they will be right for him.

Yes go to Craigslist and click on your area and put in an ad under pets for free. You will get emails and you can screen new owners yourself. You can also put his picture on the web and either link it to craigslist or have it appear in the ad. Do not use a shelter or a rescue you are much better off and so is your dog if you rehome him/her yourself. Here is the link click on the city closest to you, and then go look under pets.

call the local SPCA- Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, whether your dog bites or not. the spca will often work with aggresive dogs to get them adopted, of course this does not mean that the training will work with every dog and that no dogs are euthenized (put to sleep AKA killed). the SPCA is forced to euthenize dogs at some sites due to the problem of pets not being spayed or neudered, which leads to overpopulation. sometimes there are just too many dogs.

another option would be to look for a "no kill shelter" there are some.

and yet another option, depending upon the type of dog that you have, are rescues for specific breeds of dog. for example "the golden retreiver rescue" most dog breeds have a rescue program. i believe there might even be one for Mutts (mixed breeeds). these program put the dogs in foster homes and then match dogs with people who are looking for a certain breed. there is no age limit for the dogs to be rescued. the great part is that you know your dog will be with someone who loves them since the process to obtain a dog from the rescues is extensive. individuals who work with the rescued dogs even make home inspections at people's houses who are interested in a rescue dog.

a final option would be to put an add up various VET's offices and dog groomers. why these places? some reassurence that the person who answers your add to adopt your dog will care for them.

good luck and i'm sorry you're losing a friend.

Contact a local chihuahua rescue. They will not kill the dog, but instead put him in the best home possible.

And giving him to a shelter where they kill him is a much better idea. Sounds to me like you can't even put ads in the papers or flyer's in business places since you are so busy. Maybe you should have thought of that BEFORE taking the responsibility of owning a pet.
