Look in your own pantry and then think about how much all of this would cost to buy it yourself ~ expensive! Think about spices, flour, sugar, etc.... This type of shower is perfect for couples who have never lived in their own place before. It is a great "couples" shower for young people because it can be funny. I threw one for my nephew and his new wife as they were just out of High School and getting married. You can even buy things not necessarily somehting you would eat, but would need like (detergent for clothes/dishes - for dishes and even clothes; barsoap, tiny gadgets).

Couples bring a bag of groceries, spices, maybe even a gift certificate to a local grocery store. Helps the couple with the basics. Can also bring "small" gadgets; ie, you may buy one of each of every single soup on the Campbell's soup aisle, and then wrap in a big box and instead of a bow, use ribbon with a can opener attached to it. This could be a $100 gift (make sure you include the receipt and ask for a "gift receipt" if your grocery store will give you one, but give one anyway so that if your couple friend can return "Split Pea Soup" if they hate that kind.

Typical ideas:
Groceries
Spices
Gift Certificate
Bulk items
Spice rack
