In my town, there is a NO KILL shelter and I took a stray there once. I would see if there is one in your home town or somewhere close by. Its better than a regular animal shelter. Hope this helps!

call the local SPCA- Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, whether your dog bites or not. the spca will often work with aggresive dogs to get them adopted, of course this does not mean that the training will work with every dog and that no dogs are euthenized (put to sleep AKA killed). the SPCA is forced to euthenize dogs at some sites due to the problem of pets not being spayed or neudered, which leads to overpopulation. sometimes there are just too many dogs.
another option would be to look for a "no kill shelter" there are some.
and yet another option, depending upon the type of dog that you have, are rescues for specific breeds of dog. for example "the golden retreiver rescue" most dog breeds have a rescue program. i believe there might even be one for Mutts (mixed breeeds). these program put the dogs in foster homes and then match dogs with people who are looking for a certain breed. there is no age limit for the dogs to be rescued. the great part is that you know your dog will be with someone who loves them since the process to obtain a dog from the rescues is extensive. individuals who work with the rescued dogs even make home inspections at people's houses who are interested in a rescue dog.
a final option would be to put an add up various VET's offices and dog groomers. why these places? some reassurence that the person who answers your add to adopt your dog will care for them.
good luck and i'm sorry you're losing a friend.

Usually shelters never kill a dog unless they are suffering with an untreated disease. Or are harmful to them self or others. I actually adopted my 2 year old dog a month ago from a shelter. They really care about animals so he should be safe and off with a new family soon. I'm so sorry you have to give up such a good companion.

Hi, Sorry to hear about having to give up your dog. The best place is a humane society, if you cant find friend/family to adopt him/her. I found one near you.
Humane Society of Smith County
(903) 597-2471
1823 County Road 386, Tyler, TX
Good luck to you and your poochie!

put an add in the paper. Stating free to a good home. I myself have seen many of these adds over the last few weeks while I was lookking for a new dog and when I called most of them were already gone. Most times someone will call. You can't always be sure what kind of people the dog is going to,but ask alot of questions and if their answers satisfy you, you will have to just trust the rest. Good luck.

You can advertise in the local paper, free dog to a good family, if the dog is friendly and non-aggressive or you can locate a shelter that will adopt the dog out, and will not put it to sleep. Good Luck hope you can find a good home for your pet.

First, I'm sorry about your dog. Try this site:
http://www.mypetnanny.info/PD/Shelters/TX.htm
Also, depending on the type of dog you have, you may be able to contact a rescue group for that breed. It doesn't have to be 100% pure bred, just enough to be recognizable for the rescue group. Good luck!

You should not advertise him as being free because a lot of times puppy millers or brokers will grab them up by posing as someone who wants a pet. They they use them to resell or to pump out puppies for profit. I would not give him away unless I knew the people he was going to or knew for sure that he would have a good home.

It really depends if the dog has a history of biting or bad behavior. If not, then I'm sure they will find your dog a new home at the animal shelter.
