I am wondering approximately how long it takes to get results after a CT scan, and if the results from that can actually diagnos cancer. A family member is undergoing a lot of tests and an ultrasound found a mass on his liver. He already had a CT scan scheduled because of blood in his urine (no pain or fever associated with the blood) on the advice of his urologist. Now they want to include the liver area in the scan. Thanks!

I have had a CT scan, and no that can't tell if you have cancer by doing the scan, however they can tell if there are growths/tumors or other abnormalities in the particular areas. They have to test the growth itself to know for certain if that growth is cancer.

Also, I received my results the same week that I took the test, however I'm not sure that that is the norm.

I wish your family well, and remember cancer, if it is that, is no longer a death sentence...modern medicine has come a long way.

Is your family member in the hospital? If so, the patient usually gets the results quicker as the pathologist/physicians are on site. It may take a bit longer if not in the hospital but not much longer as there has already been a mass diagnosed; so it would still be higher priority. Once the CT is done, the physician and pathologist will look at the results and get back to you. Good luck.

For mine it took less than 1 week I believe. It all depends how busy the place is and how urgent your results are.

For myself I was having horrible migraines that were making my school average go down due to lack of being there. However they couldn't find a reason for my migraines so thought I had a brain tumor. So my doctor wanted my results asap.

Although I don't have a direct answer to your question, I do know that it's going to require patience. You don't want them to rush the diagnosis and get it wrong. I really hope all goes well, and that you can find the strength that you need during this difficult time. Good luck to you and to the patient!

no. the scan cannot tell if its cancer. they would have to take a biopsy of the mass and send it to a pathologist. good luck and god bless. hopefully its nothing.
