Prostate contains the maximum concentration of zinc in human body. It is more so in Prostatic hypertrophy. Carbonic anhydrase is a zinc metallo enzyme. The primary function of the enzyme in is to interconvert carbon dioxide and bicarbonate to maintain acid-base balance in blood and other tissues and to help transport carbon dioxide out of tissues. Surplus zinc and lack of inhibition of this enzyme perpetuates both glaucoma and BPH leading to retention of urine and increased intra occular pressure. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor drug Acetazolamide sold as Diamox is both a diuretic and a specific drug for reducing intra occular tension.
