Yes, It was a bit cramped with more than two people in it, but they did have a back seat.

I had a 1947 VW bug (Kafer) with the split rear windshield, mechanical arm turn signals and a meagre 47 HP (1200 ccm) rear engine. The rear seat could hold two adults, almost comfortably. Four persons was the absolute maximum for the early VWs. The early 1951 Karmon Ghias were strickly two passenger vehicles.
A buyer of a new VW in the pre-1950 era required a 6 - 10 month waiting period. Remember, Germany was just recovering from a damaging 8 years of war, and many industries had not recovered even in 1950.

Yes, very small ones. 2 light people can fit. There is another common problem if the seat is original; the bottom of the seat is metal springs. "What does it sit on?" you might ask. The freakin battery!!!!! So fires often started, or at least shorts, when heavy people sat in the back seat! You can prevent this by cutting a simple piece of plywood and putting it under the seat cushion.

There is also the covering of the trunk, where 2 more small ones 'could' ride, but TOTALLY unsafe and illegal.

So 4 non overweight people is the answer, but make that small modification.

absolutely.

They still use the little bugs as ambulances in some poorer communities (eg, inland Brazil)
If the patient can sit, they go behind the driver. They they need to lay down, a stretcher goes from the back seat across where the passenger seat had been

How many?
Ambulance: 1x driver + 1x sitting in back + one patient laying
beside driver
Passengers: 1x driver + 2x in back + one in front
Students: 1x driver + 3x in front seat + lost count in the back

Yep.. they sat two in front and at least two in the back (3 if you had a kid).

It wasn't the greatest thing for a long trip - especially if you were over 3' tall - but for short hops they all got there.

Kimmie,

Indeed they do...it's not huge, mind you, but I owned one throughout high school and carted friends all the time.

It fits four (with driver) comfortably, as long as the people aren't too big.
