Lots of people take Tae Kwon Do. People take it for various reasons. Depending on where you take it, you will learn more or less the basics of using your feet and fists (and arms) for self defense. It is also one of a few arts where (in general), depending on which school you go to, you are taught some of the virtues of a martial artists.

I took Tae Kwon Do until I became a 1st degree black belt. It was fun exercise and I was able to spend time with friends. The school that taught me, taught respect for others and taught you discipline. And yea, I'm pretty confindent that I could kick someone's butt if need be. I learned a lot of self defense. For example, how to escape a choke hold from front and behind and how to escape when someone has hold of both of your arms.

I have been practicing TaeKwonDo for almost 20 years. Love the art and the values I haved learn. The sport has being great to me too. But now I am too old and retired from competition. Now I coach the next generation. LOL. It saddens me that there is a lot of schools that don't teach right, that all they want is your money. Nothing wrong with charging but teach the right way. Anyway, I don't want to start complainting.

Last time I checked Tae Kwon didn't DO anything!

EDIT: Guess I got my "thumbs down" votes after the first word in the question was changed from "what" to "who"!

I've been in TKD 15 years. I started because my then 7 yr old son was interested. He stopped at brown belt. I'm a 3rd degree black belt & still going strong. It's the best thing I could have done for myself.
