Can I convert I-tunes mpeg4 video files into wmv files?

I just want to know if I can legally convert itunes mpeg4 video files into the wmv format. My friends keep telling me that I can convert i-tunes videos and put them on my Creative Vision M, but other people keep saying that its illegal or just impossible and I dont know what to believe or how it can be done. If anyone has any websites or FREE software or anything that they think would help me that would be great.

The question of legality is a grey area.

1st...for non DRM mpeg4 files from iTunes (like video podcasts) you can absolutely change the format.

2nd...for purchased files you have a conflict between fair use and DMCA. As long as you are not distributing the file and are changing it only for YOUR use you would be falling into this grey area. (It is fair use that lets you rip a CD to your computer for instance...you are changing the digital format there too and nobody claims that is illegal)

Now...as to converting from mpeg4 to wmv...

I personally use mediacoder (free and opensource software) to convert from .mp4 (if your extension is .mv4 or m4v just change it to .mp4 as this is the proper container name).

There is really no simple way (or legal) to do this. The only way I think you could do this is to get a program that records what's viewed on the screen, playback the file while recording. Messy, and totally not worth your time.
