My male smiles only when I hug and kiss him. He actually scrunches up his eyes and his lips smile. The female smiles (a Mona Lisa smile) when she's on your lap and being snuggled and told how beautiful she is. My first cat smiled all the time because he was a very happy cat who'd never known abuse or neglect. But if you just pet them, they like it but I don't think any of mine have ever smiled just from being petted.

As a general rule.. if an animal (any species) bears thier teeth to you its a sign thay are pissed off.. not a sign of affection... humans are pretty much the only specicies that 'smiles" with any sign of pleasure... (Never smile at a wild animal.. thats an invitation to fight.. people make that mistake all the time.. which is why bears and courgars, chimps, etc eat them)
My intrepretation of a smiling cat is i should back off unless i wanna get bitten... (you cat just may be more tolerant than any of the ones i've ever had before)
You are assigning a human attribute to someting thats not human.. thats a mistake IMO..
Now if the ears are down.. and they are squinting a bit.. yeah you are def pissing them off LOL

Most of them show they like it by closing their eyes, and the purring begins (a neighbor calls that their motor goes on! :) )You couls then, say they do smile. AND yes, cats can smile. go to latimes.com your scene, pets, cats, and enjoy the cats pics. You can look for my already deceased cat's pic: he's smiling in one of them!

I am sure they are smiling on the inside. Most of them anyway. Cats look like they are smiling when you pet them don't they.I know I smile, most of the time when I pet them, unless they are in that mood where they like to bite..Ouch!!!!

Yes, just a tiny bit. But, being content, look at their eyes, the 1/2 closed eyes and purring mean that they are content and trust you.

Yes, especially when they are very content while being petted.
