I've got a friend who's about to graduate med school and is interested in using his knowledge in the field of medicine for social work/activism. Basically, he told me he doesn't just wanna work at a hospital all his life. He wants to use his degree for the "bettering of society." He (as well as I) needs as much as information as possible on everything. Thanks.

There are a number of ways that you and your friend can engage in medical advocacy. You might consider work in poverty areas within the US or abroad. Many areas have clinics or need clinics in both rural and urban areas that are underserved. Within these clinics you could get involved in prevention of the most common and debilitating medical issues that are connected to poverty. Your friend could also get involved at a national/international level in addressing issues around medical issues (e.g. HIV, Hepititus, diabietis etc.) DA

Yep the above guy has the right idea, work in indigenous regions and where there is high povery etc.

Some other options would be to go into a very high paying feild eg plastic surgery, and then use that money to do some pro bono (free) GP work for poor people.

Or he could get up high in the ranks of health management/politicians and make a really big difference..

That is just refreshing that your friend would like to work in medicine while really making a difference! How about advocating for a certain population, patients' rights. Perhaps he would be interested in providing quality health care to those that are indigent, at the poverty level.
