I prefer Lenox but that's because I have Lenox dishes that are beautiful. Find a design you like and remember that they are all
well made.

wedgewood is an excellent choice very mainstream china....but nortake is on the more elegant side

That's a hard one to answer, but I'm partial to Wedgwood and Noritake. Of course the Wedgwood I have is more pottery than it is china. It's a lot thicker than my Noritake. However, I love them both.
