First, shave the berret. A single blade razor works very well or a battery operated lint cutter.
Wet it with warm water and then put it on your head. Let is sit for about 20 min and take it off carefully and place on table. When it dries, wet it again and do it again. Eventually, it will form that way.
The flash is centered on the front. If you take it to an alterations place, they will sew it on for you.

There are rules for sewing patches- all of 'em. You'll be taught. There are also books that have the rules.
The Beret is Worn with Class A, Class B, and Class C Uniforms
Edge binding 1 inch above eyebrows and straight across forehead. Center the flash ad the stiffener above the left eye. Pull excess material between the top an middle of right ear.
Hair should not extend below the front bottom edge of the beret.
Officers wear their rank centered on the flash. Enlisted soldiers wear their distinctive unit insignia on the flash
There's a picture following the above instructions.. take a look.

As mentioned above with the shaving thing. However if you're wearing the beret to U.S. Army regulations, then the center of the flash needs to be centered above your left eye, and the remainder of material pulled over the right hand side.
Oh yeah and about the Marine thing.....haha is all I'm going to say.

Most of the above answers are right on.
I would like to comment on beaudrewufl's comment though. I won't defend those wearing the black beret. If you are directing that comment to those that wear the maroon, tan, or green beret though, I am going to have to respectfully disagree. I'd be willing to bet that you are a dirty, nasty leg and have no real concept what it means to be a Paratrooper/Ranger/Special Forces.

My boyfriend told me: "if you want to see a bunch of soldiers play Barbie, give them a beret"
He said that they are really high maintenance, but totally worth it when it fits perfectly.
