I have curly brown hair. I am black, so I get relaxer (aka perm). My hair goes down to my mid-back. I want to get a relaxer, cut it shoulder lengnth, and straighten it. After that (like a week later), I want to dye it. I know you can dye it darker, but not lighter. So when you dye it lighter, what would happen to it? I am going to ask my hair dresser, but I would kind of like to know now, so I can plan what I will do with my hair. Thanks in advance.

Dying your hair lighter particularly after relaxing/perming can cause dark hair to go brassy aka orange. (Red hair will go pink-y.) Is it time for more relaxer or do you just want to go even straighter? be careful, your hair could come out in clumps. I don't mean to scare you but definitely ask your hairdresser what her experiences have been.

I think if you have a relaxer (perm) in your hair and then you dye it lighter you will overprocess your hair. It will get too dry and it will be damaged. When you dye your hair lighter, that involves bleach. You need to bleach your color out, then put a toner in. The toner is the color you want in your hair. This is also a double process, so with a relaxer it will be triple processed. It's too much chemical treatment for you hair and your hair won't be healthy. It may even break and fall out. Ask your hairdresser and she will tell you.

It depends on what colour you want it to be. If you want it to be blond then the only way you would be able to get it like that would be to go to the hair dresser. They are the only ppl that would be able to make it blond. But if you want it a lighter brown the I think you can do it at home but it would still be best to get it done professionally. And what would happen to it? The only thing that should happen to it is it should turn the colour that you want. But other than that I don't think anything will happen to it.
