I read this stuff from a reliable source and was shocked by some of the apparently-Mormonistic views! Are these truly beliefs held by the Mormons?

1. Mormons can become gods and goddesses.

2. Goddesses will spend eternity in full submission to their god-husband.

3. Mormon women will give birth “forever and ever” to spirit-babies.

4. Mormon men can have multiple wives in heaven—eternal polygamy.

5. Heavenly Father is an exalted man who lives with his goddess wife, Heavenly Mother, on a planet near the great star Kolob.

6. American Indians are descendants of the wicked Lamanites, who were Israelites that God cursed with dark skin.

7. God the Father had sex with Mary to conceive Jesus, who is the half brother of Lucifer.

8. All Christian churches are an abomination.

9. Mormons need 4 secret handshakes to get into the Celestial heaven.

10. Joseph Smith revealed that the actual Garden of Eden is in Jackson County, Missouri.

Dang....why do people believe this stuff?

Bettierage, please, be realistic. I was NOT insulting anyone else's views. If you read the question, I asked if these things were true.

Also, my beliefs are that of a Christian. But let's not get into that here, I am trying to have a peaceful conversation.

2007-02-28 14:06:05 · update #2

Also, I'm kinda curious about where they got these beliefs. Seems to me they have no basis whatsoever.

I don't think Christians have an attitude of 'our Jesus is better'. There is only one Jesus--the one in the Bible.

Mormons, quit the offended attitude. If you were paying attention at all, you would have noticed that I was trying to get accurate information before forming any sort of opinion, not insulting anyone. So get off your high horse. Thank you very much for the information.

One last thing. Why do you believe this? Hardly any of it is backed up by the Bible.

1. True in the truest sense. Many people say that faithful Mormons get their own planets to rule, but it's actually not true. They get "worlds" to rule; for all we know it could be a solar system or a whole galaxy.

2. They will be 'mostly' in submission. Although men and women are viewed as equals with 'equal roles', the man's 'equal role' is to preside over the family (and his worlds), while the woman's 'equal role' is to bring children to the world and to care for the family.

3. That is true, Mormons teach that God and his Goddess wife created us spiritually before this life, and that faithful temple-going mormons will do the same for their spirit children.

4. Yes. Joseph Smith has been sealed to over 40 wives, as has Brigham Young, as well as many others. Even though polygamy is no longer practiced in the Church, if a man's wife dies, he can be 'sealed' to another (as was the case with Apostle Russel M. Nelson); but a woman can only be sealed to one man.

5. Yes. As revealed in the Pearl of Great Price in the book of Abraham, translated by Joseph Smith from ancient Egyptian papyri

6. More or less true... not ALL are descendants of the lamanites (for example, there were also Mulekites and those that crossed the ice bridge from Asia, such as the Eskimo/Inuit Indians). Also, even after they got the dark skin, the Lamanites were at times very righteous, even moreso than their white-skinned Nephite counterparts.

7. The Church officially teaches that God fathered Jesus Christ, as did Mary. The book of Mormon states that Mary was a virgin after the conception. However, it has been often stated that the LDS leaders teach principles that contradict the Book of Mormon. Brigham Young, Parley Pratt, Wilford Woodruff, and others taught that Jesus was conceived "in the same natural manner as you or me." We are taught that we are all children of God as human spirit creations. Lucifer is, therefore, our spirit brother along with Christ. Keep in mind that it is in spirit only, so there is no "half-brother" about it.

8. Correction: all man-made doctrines found in the other Christian churches are an abomination. Since 'all other Christian churches' have some element of man-made doctrine, all have an element of abomination.

9. Yes. They are strikingly similar to Freemason handshakes, which descended from the Knights Templar, who journeyed to the remains of Solomon's temple and took evidence of what was found, including scripts with handshakes described. These handshakes were recorded and used in Mason rituals, but were slowly corrupted over time. Mormons believe that their 'secret handshakes' are a restoration of those that were originally used in Solomon's temple and are necessary for exaltation.

10. Yes, very true. He also revealed that Adam Ondi-Ahman ('the place of God where Adam dwelt') is located just outside and is where Jesus will descend first at the second coming.

Your information is surprisingly accurate. You are probably right about your source being accurate. I apologize for my other LDS/Mormon counterparts being rude and inconsiderate; these elements are considered very sacred and when they feel that someone makes light of them, they get easily offended. I commend your desire to find out about the truth.

Some of these doctrines, when considered outside of their true context and without first speaking of more basic doctrines that they are based on, can seem very odd. Such is the 'forever-and-ever giving birth' one and the 'we can become gods' one. Missionaries and Bishops are generally good at explaining the context of these doctrines to be better understood. It's like trying to get a 6th-grader to understand Trig or Calculus without first explaining algebra and geometry.

While I don't think that Bishops and Missionaries are the ONLY source you should go to, I think it's a good one to check in addition to other sources you consider. Be skeptical of everything, and consider how the Spirit makes you feel about everything. Many LDS don't completely understand their own doctrines and will tell you things that are slightly wrong, and if you believe it, you will have a skewed perception. Equally, many former members or anti-mormons distort certain principles or make unfounded extrapolations to 'scare' people away from the LDS Church. Take it all with a grain of salt and see how you think God wants you to feel about everything. Truth be told, it will probably be somewhere in the middle, but you'll have a new perception of the Church and may wish to attend it for a few weeks just to see how much these doctrines actually play into the life of a Latter-Day Saint.

1. YES!
2. No, some people may view it as that. I am my husbands partner, in the scriptures it says that a man and his wife our one, and basically must be one to receive exaltation. A man cannot enter the highest kingdom of God without a wife (whom he loves of course) And a woman cannot enter either without a husband.
3.I'm sure we can choose how many spirit babies we will have. Heavenly Father has spirit children US! And one day the world will end because all the spirit children have come. Plus our bodies our perfected, I doubt we will face the same challenges as on earth. Who knows maybe we can snap a finger and a child is born. This only happens when we become gods and goddesses.
4. No even if they could everything is perfect in Heaven, so no one would give a crap. To have a wife you must be sealed to them on Earth, which in our church you can only be sealed to one person, unless you divorce then you get re-sealed to another person.
5. Maybe not an exalted MAN but went through something similar to what we are going through on Earth. The rest yes!
6. The Lamanites were cursed, but then they became a great people and the Nephites became wicked. Jeez woman were cursed with having to give painful birth, doesn't mean anything.
7. Gods spirit entered Mary. We are ALL Gods spirit children lucifer inclluded! Jesus was the 1st born.
8. No but in the book of mormon there is talk of a great abominable church.
9. Hahaha no we need 12 secret hand shakes, our secret underwear, and we have to be free masons.
10. I don't know about this one.

1. Yes. Not, every Mormon though...there will be "Mormons" in every Kingdom I think - Celestial, Terrestrial and Telestial. Just being a mormon doesn't guarantee anything. It's pretty deep stuff - you can read about it in Doctrine & Covenants section 76.
2. No. We believe men and women each have divine roles and duties specific to their gender...we are both equal in each others eyes and God's eyes.
3. Uh, maybe. We believe those in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom will have the opportunity to progress in all things - posterity, dominion, power, knowlege, etc...
4. Yes. Men can have multiple wives but it's not a "must". Example: A man and woman are married for time and all eternity, have children. The woman dies. The man remarries and has children with his new wife. How would that man choose whom to spend eternity with? He doesn't have to. God has allowed for circumstances such as that.
5. Sort of. We do believe that God was once as we are now and that we all have the potential to become like him. It will take a VERY long time, but we do have the potential.
6. Again, sort of. We do believe several groups of people came from the east to the American continent - not just "The U.S."... and that there were certain peoples who were cursed with darker skin because of unrighteousness, that does not mean though that we believe their whole posterity is wicked or anything.
7. No to the first question. We do believe that we are ALL spirit sons and daughters unto God, that includes you, me, Christ, Lucifer and his angels, the President, and everyone else who has ever lived or will live on this earth. We believe God the Father created all spirits and that Christ was his first-born in spirit and Only Begotten in the flesh.
8. No, we believe all churches have some good. We do believe ours has the fulness of the gospel restored through continued revealtion...
9. What you are referring to is probably something you read or told to you of ordinances that are performed in the temple. In a way, yes, we do believe there are certain things we must know/do to be able to enter the Lord's presence.
10. I think that is found in the Doctrine and Covenants, sometimes it is referred to as "Adam-ondi-Ahman".

You ask how we know these things. We believe in past as well as modern revealtion...it is through revealtion from the Lord to the prophets and then to us that we know of these things. We know them to be true from study, prayer and answers to prayer. I myself have received many answers to prayer and had many special spiritual experiences in which the Holy Ghost has witnessed to me the truthfulness of these things. I encourage all to do the same.

Speaking as a Mormon, I can tell you that while some of these points are true, they are not in context. And some of them (like #2) are just goofy! Anyone who has been in a marriage for any amount of time knows that wives don't "submit". Come on, my husband walks in the door and hands me his cheque! And for heaven's sake, I HOPE I'm not an eternal babymaking factory! (#3) Holy cow, the two I had here were hard enough!
4. We believe that marriage is eternal. We believe that families are eternal. Some men have married more than one wife....like widowers for example. The covenant of their marriage is eternal. A couple of things regarding "polygamy". First, while we practised polygamy in the past, it was ALWAYS with CONSENTING ADULTS...never with children (like some of the freaks on R&S will try to tell you...perverts!). And the man had to be asked by the Church leaders, the wife had to give her permission (and if she said no, that was the end of it). Additionally, the man needed to be wealthy enough to support more than one family (Brigham Young was a rich man!). Finally, there will be no new marriages in Heaven. Only the ones which were solemnized on Earth. So my husband is going to end up with exactly me. There will be no 70 virgins. No multiple wives. The vast majority of marriages through the ages have been one man, one woman.
5. Uhh....did you think that God was popping up and down on the clouds?
6. Actually, only SOME of the people on this continent are descended from Isrealites. It is not difficult to see that the Innuit people and the Guarani are not close cousins, right? In fact, the Guarani of Paraguay have some interesting legends as to the origin of their race, closely parallelling what is written in the Book of Mormon...if you were to bother to read it.

7. Oh where to start?

8. No, all Christian churches are NOT an abomination. We love our fellow Christians. We support them in their good works and want to see them succeed. We love the truths that they preach. What we don't like is false piety. (The attitude of "our Jesus is better than your Jesus".)

9. Do you know what the secret handshakes are? Will you share this with me? Where did you get this from ?????

10. Joseph Smith revealed a lot of things. He talked about the Civil War several years before it happened. He talked about Adam. He saw Eve in a vision (apparently, she was really tall and exquisitely beautiful.) During the ages of time, the plates of the earth have separated, moved, and relocated. Where did you think that the Garden of Eden should be located?

This is a case of not seeing the forest for the trees. Where do you get your information? It wasn't from the horse's mouth, obviously. If you REALLY want to know about Mormons, check out the website below.

1. Yes. But, they will never be greater or equal to God the Father. They can only become perfect as God is perfect.

2. False. The man and women are equals in the relationship, on Earth and in Heaven.

3. True, sort of. Couples who are sealed in the Temple and are obedient can continue to have spirit children after this life. However, this does not mean that is all they will be doing.

4. True, sort of. Men can be sealed to multiple women, which usually only happens if a man is married and then his wife dies and he is sealed to another woman. Understanding of this is limited, and they may not be together. The main idea is that everyone must be sealed through the Priesthood in order to return to God's presence.

5. True, sort of. God is an exalted being of flesh and bone. Mormons do believe there is a Heavenly Mother and that they reside somewhere, near Kolob.

6. Most likely they are descendants of the other group that came to the Americas at the time of the Tower of Babel.

7. False. It was by the spirit she conceived. No actual sex. Don't know where you heard that. Couldn't be further from true.

8. False. Mormons respect all churches and believe many churches teach and contain much truth. They do however believe that they have the most truth. Mormons consider themselves Christian (the definition is subjective because most people believe if someone elses teachings don't jive with their own, or with their interpretation of the Bible, then they aren't Christian).

9. Not completely true. Mormons believe there are numerous things people must do in order to get into the Celestial Kingdom, such as get baptized, be sealed to a spouse by the Priesthood, receive one's endowment (which included making promises and learning certain things about God and the method of entering God's presence), live the teachings of God and Jesus, etc., etc.

10. I can't recall of it was Joseph Smith, but they believe it was near there.

This is a quick response, and to the lay person could sound out there or wierd, but that is fine. There is no way one can comprehend many of these teachings without first obtaining a foundation. Just like I wouldn't expect someone to understand algebra without first learning simple addition or mulitplication I wouldn't expect these all to make sense. These teachings are in line with the Bible and are very logical, to some, like me. These matters really can't be explained in such a small place, and one could spend a life time studying before they are completely understood. I respect that people find these difficult to digest and respect all people and their faiths. Fortunately, its not mine or anyone elses position to judge.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I have been a member since 2001.
I disagree with #4. Mormon men can have multiple wives in heaven—eternal polygamy.
I dont believe that at all.
No, the Garden of Eden is not in Jackson County, Missouri.
I am not going to answer #9 either cause that is something sacred.
GOD did not have sex with Mary to conceive Mary. The Holy Ghost did.
We do believe that we once lived in a Spirit World and that we all knew each other. Scary, isnt it?
Go to http://www.mormon.org and try to find the real answers.
Good Luck!

Active Mormon here. So numbers 2,7,8,9, and 10 are definitely false. Not sure what "reliable source" you read, but those are not church standings at all. Now the others have some truth to them. You should really talk to the pros out there, the missionaries. No sense getting your info from ignorant anti-mormons who have their head up their butt. By the way, we are taught in the church to respect the views and faiths of others. Sorry if other 'mormons' didn't portray that.

Tip: Don't trust what one religionist tells you about another religion anymore than what a ford dealer says about the chevy.

Unfortunately yes... also
there are 3 heavens
Black people are not good enough( or used to be)
Women get pregnant to bring the spirit babies to Earth.. this is why they have so many children..... they need all these people to convert us in to Mormons
they have to go to bed at 10:30 (no joke)
secret handshakes... yes to go beyond the veil
The first person you will see is Joseph Smith

there is a 'church' run by a man named James Billings the Left the Mormon church and claims he is a profit and runs his own 'church. Get this.. HE is a millionaire and has several that work for him and didn't get paid.. why? because he has them all living in a building and provides for them. Freaky eh? I know this because I became Friends with a young man that lived there. He calls this place ZION.. yes the garden of Eden is where This guy says it is... in the states or the AMERICAS

I have a Mormon freind and the church is hard. She will never leave it because she has been taught since day one that if she doesnt belong, she will go to Hell. Doesnt matterwhat the Bible says.. only what they teach.

The Church always teaches the SAME sermon around the world every Sunday.

You are not allowed in the temple for it is sacred and you are not worthy if you dont accept Joseph Smith. SO if you have a family memeber married in the temple... you may not go unless you are Mormon...
The list goes on

I'm a lifelong faithful Mormon, so maybe I can help:

1. Mormons can become gods and goddesses.
This is not only true about Mormons, but about anyone. We're all children of God, and all have the same potential. Don't you believe that you will live forever? If you're going to live forever, don't you think you'll have plenty of time to progress and improve as a person? We don't believe you'll be handed a "Congratulations, you're a God!" certificate when you die. We believe in eternal progression. Believe in your own potential.
http://mormon.org/learn/0,8672,1116-1,00.html

2. Goddesses will spend eternity in full submission to their god-husband.
I have never in my life heard this in Church or in our Temples. I'm not sure where it comes from, but is likely propogated in order to do damage to the Church. If I know anything about Mormon culture, Mormon husbands are generally the ones in submission (that's just my personal opinion). Here is what the Church says:
http://mormon.org/learn/0,8672,1461-1,00.html

3. Mormon women will give birth “forever and ever” to spirit-babies.
This is related to #1 above.

4. Mormon men can have multiple wives in heaven—eternal polygamy.
I have never in my life heard this in Church or in our Temples. I'm not sure where it comes from, but is likely propogated in order to do damage to the Church. Here is the Church's stance on polygamy:
http://mormon.org/question/faq/category/answer/0,9777,1601-1-114-1,00.html

5. Heavenly Father is an exalted man who lives with his goddess wife, Heavenly Mother, on a planet near the great star Kolob.
Somewhat related to #1 above. We don't talk about God's wife, nor do we pretend to know anything about her. We believe that all mankind are God's children, and are created in His image. In order for that to happen, there must be a Heavenly Mother. But that is simply a conclusion drawn through logic, since there is no mention of her in the Bible or Book of Mormon.

6. American Indians are descendants of the wicked Lamanites, who were Israelites that God cursed with dark skin.
The Book of Mormon record involves small families of Israelites that inhabited probably 200-300 square miles in America somewhere. It's likely that the American continents experienced migration from all over the world before, during, and after the time period that the Book of Mormon covers. So it's quite possible that SOME Native Americans are of direct Lamanite descent while others (likely the majority) are not.

7. God the Father had sex with Mary to conceive Jesus, who is the half brother of Lucifer.
Once again, this appears to be another invented "belief" that was derived in order to do damage to the Church. We do not make any claims about the Immaculate Conception outside of what any other mainstream Christian religion believes. We believe the record in the New Testament.
Here is what Mormons believe about Lucifer:
http://mormon.org/question/faq/category/answer/0,9777,1601-1-1371-16,00.html

8. All Christian churches are an abomination.
Here is what Gordon B. Hinckley (President of the Church) says regarding people of other faiths:
"I think there are many good people everywhere. And our appeal is to those people. We don’t down grade any Church. We don’t speak disparagingly of any Church. We simply say to people of other Churches, bring all the good that you have and come and let us see if they if we can add to it."

9. Mormons need 4 secret handshakes to get into the Celestial heaven.
We perform ordinances in our temples that we believe are sacred and will draw us nearer to God. Most religions perform rituals of their own that they believe serve the same purpose.
More on Mormon temples:
http://mormon.org/learn/0,8672,1297-1,00.html

10. Joseph Smith revealed that the actual Garden of Eden is in Jackson County, Missouri.
We do not know for sure exactly where the Garden of Eden was located. The D & C scriptures state only that Adam dwelt in the area of Missouri after He was cast out of the Garden. Where he dwelt may have been far removed from the Garden of Eden. It's hard to rule it out any location prior to the Flood that took place in Noah's time, knowing that Noah and his family probably drifted for quite some time. That's a pretty obscure topic, if you ask me. I can't remember a time that it has ever been discussed in Sunday School. Most of our time in Church is spent on learning Repentance, Forgiveness, Christ's Atonement, being good fathers and mothers, etc.

Why do we believe what we believe, MissFlorida? Because we believe in a living God who still talks to his children. Why would God only talk to Moses, Abraham, and the original 12 apostles? Why wouldn't he talk to ancient Americans too? Why wouldn't he talk to us today?

This is all true and part of the tenets of their beliefs. Keep in mind their founder was a con artist who was lynched by a mob that were financially ruined by him. The funniest part was Joseph Smith translated the "books" that he dictated to one of his followers. The first passages were lost deliberately to see if the translations came out the same per verbam (to see if he was making this up) When informed of this Smith said god was angry and would not allow him to re transcribe the passages but god would allow him to translate another book with similar information. This proves the whole freaking thing was made up. Of course the golden seals that Moroni the angel disclosed disappeared. Christ will be returning somewhere near Kansas. Hilarious. African americans were denied opportunites to be in the clergy until recently as they were deemed unworthy as they were cursed by god with dark skin. As being decendants of Cain
