This has got to be Audie Murphy - the most highly decorated soldier of the US Army in WW2 I believe. Not sure, but think he was awarded the Purple Heart on three separate occasions.

Guess what? When he got to Hollywood they put him in war movies - what else. There are quite a few of these all worth seeing by the way.

Not sure what happened to Audie Murphy beyond the 1940s 50s.

There were other movie stars who signed up during WW2. Probably the best well known is James Stewart who eventually became a general in the USAAF [United States Army Air Force]

If you ever get to see a movie called "Flight of the Pheonix" Jimmy Stewart is the guy who flys the plane and is actually wearing his own WW2 officers cap. Brilliant.

Even we in England know it was Audie Murphy!
There was a film about his exploits.
Was it called "To Hell and Back"?
He won the Congressional Medal of Honour along with a pile of others.
At the end of the film a long list of his medals rolls down the screen.
A collection of Silver Stars and Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts and lots of others.
He must have been a brave guy because even the French gave him medals (and that's saying something!)
He played himself in the film because he was still such a Baby-faced kid.
There's a scene in the film where he's on a burning Sherman tank firing a 50 calibre.
On English TV they once interviewed a German soldier who had been at this actual fight.
He said none of his regiment could tell where the firing was coming from because all they could see was was woods and the tank.
And they KNEW it couldn't be the tank, because
it was just a mass of flames.
But there was Audie blasting away!
I think he got severely burned.

Leon Murphy (June 20, 1924 – May 28, 1971) was an American soldier in World War II. In 27 months of combat action, he became the most decorated U.S. combat soldier of World War II.

Murphy received the Medal of Honor, the military's highest award for valor, along with 32 additional medals awarded for bravery and service.

In the later part of his life, he went on to have a successful movie career, including the extremely popular To Hell and Back(1955), based on his memoir of the same name (1949).

Audie Murphy, and he starred as himself in a film of his experiences which was called "to hell and back"

Also I would be surprised if jimmy stewart flew B52's as they were not even designed until 12 years after the war finished and didnt come into service until the early 1960's

It was definitely Audie Murphy from the "Great State of Texas". A very large portrait of him in uniform & with all medals hangs right outside the door to the state senate at the state capitol in Austin. He didn't become an actor untill after the war. I have to say, he wan't really a very good actor but adequate I guess.
