What can I do to silence my neighbor? I have just bought a house and now I realize my neighbor is a car junkie, he insist on working on his cars in the evenings and at night .This has happened four times since I have moved in and I have been here a week. THe car is nowhere near done either. I am an early bird and the rumbling of the motor at redline is driving me insane. I don't feel like approaching him as he seems set in his ways and I have an extreme type A personality, this could only lead to a volitile confrontation.

You just moved in. You must talk to him or else you are in for a miserable existence. Invite him over for a cup of coffee (or whatever) and bring up the subject casually. He won't stop if he doesn't know it is bother you. Since you've not actually met him, you don't know that he isn't actually a good guy.

If you are gunning for a fight, chances are you will get one and again, be miserable in your new house. How bad will that suck?

Well, if you don't want to confront him and you don't feel he'd stop anyway, you'll have to make it so that you can't hear him. Windows let in a lot of noise, so make sure the seals are good and then get heavy curtains. The heavy curtains will drown out any outside noice. Then, start sleeping with a fan. A box fan is the best because it is usually the loudest without being nerve wrecking. If you don't like the wind on your face, just turn it around. But place the fan close to your bed. It might be hard to get used to, but once you do, you'll love it. No dogs barking, no cars reving, or anything. Good luck!

How can someone know they are annoying you if you don't mention it. Go to your neighbor, intorduce yourself, take cookies, and chat.
Say by the way I see you work on your car but is it possible not to work after 9 pm as I have to get up at 5 am. I am just trying to get some extra sleep. The nice approach is the first and best.

Most towns/cities have noise ordinance laws stating that after 10 pm on weeknights and 12 am on weekends (Which should also be 10 for the people that work weekends) that people need to keep noise levels down. If he is working on his car after 10 pm just ask him if he can keep it down as you have to get up early. Police won't do anything if it is not past 10pm.

Talk to him or send him a cordial letter, perhaps asking if he can have a definite quitting time each night... say, 8pm or something. If he disagrees and it is still really loud, call the police and file a noise complaint.

Check with your local council or local police station. If he is within the times where there is no ban to loud noise unfortunately there is not much you can do. If he is outside these guidelines you can call the police and they will have a chat with him.

If you're not willing to approach your neighbor to talk to him, then ignoring it is probably your only optoin. Maybe he's not aware that it's so disturbing to those around him. I say you talk to him. Or- buy ear plugs.
