I plan on marrying her soon, and I would like to adopt her daughter, who is three. The child does not have a father, so to speak, and there is no name listed on the child's birth certificate. Will I be able to adopt her, and legally change her last name to mine? the father has never been in the picture, and never will, due to the fact he is a piece of crap, and doesn't deserve a child. he was abusive and the what not. the little girl pretty much knows me to be her father, and we want it to be legal. Let me know!

My husband adopted my daughter when she was 2 and she's now 8. Depending on what state you live in, there are certain requirements and steps you will have to take before you can adopt the daughter. After you are married, both of you should go talk to a family/adoption attorney. The attorney will be able to help you get through all the red tape. We ended up spending about $900.00 total from beginning to end, but it is worth every penny. Some states advise that ads must be run in newspapers advising that you are wanting to adopt the child, since there is no father named on birth certificate, that anyone who could possibly be the father has a right to step up. I don't think all states require this though. Check with a lawyer before doing anything. Good luck and congratulations on your family. It's nice to see there are still men out there with enough heart to love a child as their own.

YES!! When I was 2 my step father adopted me legally. You will have to go before a judge and prove that you can support (emotional, mental, monetarily) the child. The biological father will also have to sign over his rights, but since there is not one listed this is not an issue. You should go to a local legal aid attorney and ask to start the process. Good luck, congradulation and keep up the good work.

Yes, you can adopt her. Because there is no name on the birth certif. BUT even if it is a problem, all the lawyer will do is put a blurp in the legal notices of the paper. Let it for for a bit and if no one steps up and says, "Hey - That's my kid." Then it's all good. My step father adopted me when I was 7.

Yes you can adopt her. The name change might be a little bit of a problem. You'd have to change the name on her SS card and everything. Youre a good person for being there for this little girl and her mother. The world needs more commendable people like you.

Judges will want you to be married usually for a year before adoption is considered. Plus you have to get the father to give up custody first.

Shouldn't be an issue. It might make it a little easier once you are married, if you are willing to wait for that.
I'm glad she will have a responsible father figure in her life now :) Every girl needs that!

Sorry to hear that.
I believe that you really love your gf.
I am not a citizen in US. I can't adopt this little. I don't think she is my daughter. However, I am willing to give her what a father does. I love kids. I am appreciate that you would adopt her. Keep going!!!

I wish all men were as nice as you are.... yes, you can, since there is no father's name on the birth certificate, you only need her mother's permission.
