the shot gun has most of its power in shot range but rifle in long range

Shotgun. If you shoot someone with a shotgun, even if they are wearing a vest, the shock can put them down long enough for you to get to a phone.

However, shotguns are not accurate. If you need range then a rifle is the way to go.

To answer your question the shotgun (slugs) without question has more power (mass x velocity).

Relatively speaking, a shotgun's total "power" is the total energy of all its moving shot....so you can much easier think of it as one single projectile just like a rifle to keep the math easy.

A .308 rifle will usually run between 2400 and 2700 foot pounds of force.

A Federal Power-Shok 1.25oz 12ga slug (2 3/4") will do 2800 foot pounds.

Most 2 3/4" 12ga slugs will make between 2400-2600ft.lbs so one can roughly estimate that a standard 12ga has about as much power as a
.308.

A Federal Power-Shok 3" 1.25oz slug will top 3100ft.lbs.

To Brad below....

Length of barrel on the shotgun has zero effect on the total "power"....shotgun ammo is gauged with a standard minimum length barrel. That means if the box says "1200fps", you'll get 1200fps at 18" and won't gain much beyond that no matter how long a barrel you put on it. Choke also has zero effect. The original poster asked about "power" which means foot pounds, not range. Total weight of the projectile/s multiplied by velocity.

Your .223 tops out somewhere around 1300 foot pounds of force....that's the number you need to look at, not just velocity. You only had half the equation.

By comparison, a 12ga slug from a standard 2 3/4" shell can double that.

If you wanted to REALLY put a hurting on your target, ammo like Lightfield's 3 1/2" slug....3700ft. lbs at the muzzle. You won't be finding many common rifles in your neck of the woods that compare to that.

Don't you think its dependent on amt of gunpowder and the calibre of the round?
Larger rounds need more gunpowder thus more powerful
The shotgun has many projectiles and that is why the energy is lesser in the long range.
More power overall, probably still the rifle.

With a shotgun Its all a facter to the leanght of the barrel/choke and the amunition used,, Over all the rifle would win its produces much greater kenetick energy than the shotgun, I will use 2 or my guns for example.
My beretta 686 with the right cartridge will travel about 1450 ft per sec where my Cz 223 the bullet will travel round about 3000 ft per sec, which is covering twice the distance in the same time, faster than the speed of sound.

i'm the precise comparable way, I surely shop on with the attack rifles and smg's. For attack rifles my 2 favorites have become the m16 with purple dot or acog, 3 frags, struggling with potential, and martyrdome or stable objective or deep result; the different is the m14 surely with the precise comparable setup. those mixtures are very useful and searching on your accuracy can often kill your enemy in one or 2 photos. For smg's I often follow with the mp5 or the p90, silenced or purple dot, 3 frags, struggling with potential or UAV jammer, and often martyrdome. then you in basic terms could be waiting to p.c.. staring on the map which you think of is suited. of course do no longer use martyrdome while you're playing hardcore. Why is any perk "noob", anybody has the comparable ideas for perks, in case you think of it extremely is arbitrary to apply it why do no longer you utilize it? I by no potential use juggernaut yet that does no longer mean some one else who does, would not comprehend what they're doing. each and every man or woman likes distinctive setups. Why are martyrdom or juggernaut anymore "noob" than 3 frags? or struggling with potential? in basic terms on account which you do no longer use it and persons kill you with it does no longer mean it extremely is "noob".

You kind of answered your own question except to say that it also depends on the gauge/caliber. And of course size of the cartidge and amount of powder.
