This is a real challenge. A .410 is a usual starter gun for some young people. You can get a New England Firearms single shot at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or sporting goods stores for about $100. This was my first gun. The problem with this gun is that the .410 uses a very small shell without much shot and it is pretty hard to hit flying targets (skeet or birds) with this gun. It is thought to be a beginning gun because it has a light recoil/kick, but it takes a good shot to hit something. This can be discouraging for a young shooter.

I would suggest that you consider a 20 gauge. Again, a single shot as decribed above is in a similar price range ($100) and the 20 gauge shells are actually cheaper.

New England Firearms also makes a Pardner pump model which is probably about $150-175 and is also sold at these same locations. I believe it is also in .410, 20, and 12 gauge.

The 12 gauge can be purchased for $150-$225 in the form of a Mossberg Maverick pump shotgun.

As another person suggested, the Remington 870 Express (also available in youth model) in 12 or 20 gauge is a good choice too. I think these are $275-$300 at Wal-Mart.

If you are buying for a young person, I would suggest a 20 gauge in the best model you can afford. A single shot is okay, but a pump is preferred. If you are an adult, you might want to start with a 12 gauge if you can handle the kick. It has the cheapest shells.

Good luck.

You can't go wrong with a Remington 870 pump shotgun in .20 or .12 gauge. The twelve, of course, will have more recoil. The 870 is still fairly reasonably priced, say under four-hundred new and under three used.

Good luck.

I suspect you don't want to spend $125,000 on a Purdey. You'll have to start with what you intend to do with it. I prefer hunting with side-by-sides. Over/unders are a better choice for breaking clay, and do well in the field as well. Guns with only one barrel, whether single shot, pump or auto, are less expensive to manufacture and are therefore more popular. If your thoughts on use are not well-formed, a 12 bore will be most versatile, and there are lots of major makers of good guns: Remington, Ruger, Winchester, Mossberg, CZ, AyA, Beretta, Benelli, the list goes on and on.

Remington 870 Express 20 guage is an excellent beginners gun but you shouldn't have to pay more than about 250 for one. Since it is a beginner's gun you could probably find one even cheaper used. I still use one for rabbit and quail because they are light.

Mossberg 500 in 12 ga, was my first, and only shotgun. Easy to find different barrels, relatively inexpensive, easy to maintain and always reliable.
