Different age groups require a different amount. Babies sleep alot, and it tapers off with the increase in age. However, during adolescence (teenage years) the need for more sleep increase again. Probably because of growth spurts and hormones. You probably need at least 8-10 hours a night. Although, with the active lives of teenagers these days with academics and sports and other extra-curricular activities it seems impossible. Because your body requires more sleep at this age, you are probably feeling tired because you are so busy and spread so thin. When I was in high school, I used to take a nap after school on game days (when there was a time lapse before the bus left for a game or reporting to the gym for home games). I was so exhausted, I could lay down and sleep. On nights I was without homework, I would fall asleep at 7 pm. And of course, we all know teens sleep in on the weekends when they can. It's not because they are lazy- it's their body's way of "catching up" on much needed rest it didn't get during the week. Catch a nap when you can, sleep on the bus on the way to and from games, go to bed early when possible. Take whatever opportunity you can to get some extra zzzz's to help your body catch up when you are too busy to get the amount you really need during the regular schedule. Good luck.

I've heard that people require different amounts of sleep at different periods in their lives. Sometimes you'll sleep excessively, sometimes 4-6 hours will be enough for you. I don't know what the normal amount is for your age, but I'd say if you aren't getting enough sleep and are really tired, go to bed earlier so you get more sleep hours. Just listen to your body, and work around it.

minimum 8 hours.
if you are not well rested, then how can you perform your best academically or physically in sports.
don't try to do too much and be overwhelmed. you want to enjoy and be happy with life ... not stressed because your lack of sleep is affecting your grades and athletic abilities.
